BTW, other than taking something hot to the handle material, how does one check to see if the handle is a plastic derivative or a natural material like bone or wood?

Take a sharp blade and rest the edge on a portion of the scale material. Do not press down. If, when you gently try to move the blade left or right, it feels like it's "digging in" (like it would do on a thumbnail), it's delrin or other synthetic. If it "skates" a bit from side to side (with no downward pressure) it's very likely bone.
