Howdy,
I've been looking at Queen Stockman models. The larger ones.
I see they make two. 4" (9CSB - Large Stockman) and 4 1/4" (49CSB - Cattle King).

I note that the 4" has rounded bolsters while the 4 1/4" has the more traditional (for a stockman) squared off bolsters.
I also note that blade shape of the sheepsfoot blade seems a bit different between them.

The blades on the 4 1/4 seem a bit wider. Is this so?
Are the blades on the 4 the same thickness as those on the 4 1/4.
A strange question, but one of the reasons I was looking at the larger stockmans is I have this liking for large chunks of steel. (uh, yes. I do like hand tools. Why do you ask?)

Can any of you folks tell me any other differences between the two?

Anyone have any recommendation between the two aside from being prepared to sharpen for a whale of a long time until I get a proper edge on the durn thing?

Thanks for the help.

Just get both, Frank. Simple, clean and easy. Why make yourself suffer unnecessarily? ;)

Stand by, Frank, I'm trying to get a couple quick shots that may help. I have a #9 and RAT Cattleman.

Best I can do at the moment... The larger stockman has wider, beefier blades.

Queen's amber bone is just consistently gorgeous.

Holy Cow!

Well, that settles that question.

Thanks Elliott.

How do the tangs look on the Queens? are the blades tumbled, hence making the tangs edges a bit rounded or are they crisp and squared to the backsprings?
I coulda just said how's the F&F?The bone does look nice.

Queens are done the old fashioned way - not tumbled - to the blade backs and tangs are square and crisp. I find the F&F on the new amber bone Queens to be like the older XX era Case knives. The amber bone is reminiscent of Case XX era red stag.

That's quite an endorsement. I only have one XX era Case, a 6231 1/2 which is built like a tank and which I admire very much for the level of quality it exemplifies. It has backsprings and snap the likes of which you don't come across very often these days.

As soon as I got the Case Texas Jack for the 70s and could compare the new Queens to the older Case I felt the same way...

Frank,
The 4 1/4" Cattle King #49 is substaintially bigger,
Elliotts photo is at an angle and exagerates the difference in size
But the Cattle King is one big working knife!

It is the knife I write down when you have these fantasy only one folder threads :)

Queen Cattle King is also my EDC slipjoint, as re-made by A.C. Warren with the stock blades and springs, stainless steel dovetailed bolsters and liners, and stag scales....'bout perfect for me, and very reasonable at a final cost of less than $325.00(show me a full on 3-blade custom that nails all these features for $325.00, and I'll order every big stockman that maker produces)

Best Regards,

Well if you won't post an image you'll have to send it to me so I can determine if I need one. ;)

Full Custom with pearl from this pattern:

Devin Thomas damascus blades, Hawaiian black coral scales, made from same pattern:

Yes there are subtle differences between the pearl model and the black damascus one, mostly because I requested that Al make the pearl custom as close to a Queen Cattle King as humanly possible, and with the black one, Al made it for a show, and did not want to be so strictly constrained. Great maker to work with!

Happy Elliott?:D

Well, yes, STeven, I am. ;)

Now about that Ruple you owe me an image of...(you can send that privately so as not to go too far off track in this thread.)

Thanks for the images!

I like them both but I prefer the 4" model because it will do everything the 4 1/4" will do and carry a littler better. If your wanting a big bad blade though you will probably prefer the Cattle King.

Cool Stuff. STeven, as per usual, your collection is truly awesome. Your knives are far beyond anything I would ever be able to buy, but I do enjoy looking at them.

Neeman and Peter Parker, thanks for your comments. I'm still trying to decide which model, but your comments are helping.

Thanks,
Frank

Frank,

For many, many years, I did'nt have very much money.....$200.00 was my limit for a knife....you never know what the future will bring.

If you told me that I would have a nice, small collection of slipjoints as recently as 1998, I might have been inclined to spit.....everything is subject to change;):D;)

Thanks for the compliments on my collection. It takes a lot of work, but it is fun.

I have a 4" Hen and Rooster Stockman with really nice cranberry jigged bone and a fairly wimpy walk and talk that you can have if you want to PM me your address, and you can see how you like that size.

For EDC, I like them bigger.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson
