quench help please

i think im going to break the blade, you guys piqued my curiousity. im not sure what im looking for but i will try to get the best pics i can with my macrolens.
mike.

by the way i want to thak you all for trying to give me insight on why this happened!

Hey I am open minded I will give both a try, the scotch first and then the soak, but not both on the same day. I would think both would help to improve my knifemaking. I guess I had some phobia about over heating things, the scotch should help with the phobia.
Cheers Ron

I have found that the island malts, Scapa, Talisker, Ledaig, Highland Park etc... refine grain the best, with the Islay's (Laphroig, Bowmore, Caol Illa etc...) obtaining and maintaining the finest grain sizes in most steels...:D

No REALLY! Send me a small sample of steel and a bottle of Lagavulin and I will micrograph it and give you any grain size you want!

That's a strange looking crack to me, sort of ragged or something. Seems to be another one adjacent to it in Dan's photo. Did the crack go through to the other side? If it's just on the one side, I'd be inclinded to go along with whoever said it was a flaw in the steel.

As I read this I am sipping on some 30 year old Laphroig. It is like drinking liquid smoke, mixed with fire, and poured from heaven. It is the King of the Islay's.With a proper application of it (to the smith),you can't see the grain in the blade (it is there, you just can't see it!)

The Clean Sweep! (this is from the "Friends of Laphroaig" mailing I got last night.)

The San Francisco World Spirits Competition is considered by many to be the toughest and most prestigious of awards. The whiskies are all tasted by the panel of judges 'blind' so that there is no bias. We entered all our 5 main expressions: 30 year, 15 year, 10 year Cask Strength, 10 year and, of course, Quarter Cask. To give it away a little, there is a special award above the usual Bronze, Silver and Gold, known as Double Gold. This is reserved for when a whisky not only wins gold in its class, but is voted first by the whole panel of experts. Now the results:

30 Year old - Double Gold and winner of the of 'The Best Single Malt in the whole show'!
15 Year old - Double Gold!
10 Year old - Cask Strength - Double Gold!
10 Year old - Double Gold!
Quarter Cask - Double Gold!

And ... wait for it ... our distillery (sorry - your distillery!) was voted "Distiller of the Year" - one of the highest honours that can be bestowed on a distillery. We are so proud - as I am sure you are too!

May I take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you (246,983 at the last count) for your support (and good judgement!) in being part of our award-winning distillery.

Slante

Now that is one fine showing!!!

there is 2 cracks in the spine. the cracks do go all the way through. the big one is about 3/8 long and the other is just shy of that. i tried to break the blade tonight but i pulled 2 of the screws holdind down my vise out. i will get the vise more secured tomorrow and give'r hell: )

Mike since you are just in Jackson, if you would like to bring the knife over to my place and give it a thorough looking over, you are welcome. I hope to have another gathering of local makers this spring as soon as I can get my ducks in a row.
