I have 5 blades ready to HT in 1095.
I have 4 gallons of Mobil 1 used 5w-30 full synthetic
Extended performance oil.
Would this be suitable?

Thanks in advance.,Norsewolf

Sorry, not for 1095, and not recommended as a quenchant. 1095 requires a fast oil, such as parks50. However canola oil heated to 120 degrees will work.
Brion

Agree with Brion, motor oil way too slow for 1095. Canola will work but not as well as Parks 50.

I would buy a couple of gallons of Canola or do a brine quench and cross my fingers. Brine will get it screaming hard but may crack your blade. You can always send it out for H/T.

I would never suggest motor oil for anybody. That stuff makes some nasty smells and who-knows-what when steel is quenched in it. Canola oil is always the safer choice, and it smells nice.

Like Darrin says too, you can do brine if you're up for that.

How are you planning on heating them? 1095 needs pretty precise temp control and soak time. 1084 is a really good beginners steel.

And an interrupted brine quench would be better than canola oil for you. The interrupted quench lessens the chance of your blade cracking.

I have a propane Whisper Momma forge.
I also have a heat treat oven that has analog
thermostat that I'm planning on updating.
I was considering using the propane forge
until this post. I've decided to upgrade controls
on the heat treat oven sooner.

Thanks for all input.
