Quench oil and alternatives for simple steels like 1080/ 1085???

I think we've hashed out quenchants to the point that we can just state brands and alternatives without getting hot under the collar. We're all too tired to duke it out.

I like Houghton K and it is quite comparable to P50 with a longer life, supposedly. Mine was $125 delivered for 5gal.

You won't get someone to make you 10 gallons of a custom spec item any less than you can buy a commercially sold item.

& be happy you can buy it within the US,
Can you imagine what we pay in shipping and crossing the border?

Just figure out best pricing and shipping and order the Parks 50

getting drums of canola, seems silly when it's way too much of something that's not really what you need.

Count, I agree with the 10 gal thing. I am thinking and talking and typing all at the same time. Sometimes when I multitask it doesn't always come out right. What I am thinking I am not that far from Texas and if I could get a 55 gal drum of something like Parks50 and then turn around and resale what I don't need to offset my costs. Well it might be worth a drive to Texas if you know what I mean. I have done such a thing before by purchsing in bulk and resaleing to cover my costs and its a win win for evryone involved if you can get the bulk at the right price! Ok I was just thinking out loud so will shut up now!:D When I actually begin to realize what that was going to cost for a 55 gal drum of something. Well it's time to pull out "PLAN B",, which was at the most 10gals.

Rick am I just blind or is that moderator tag something new?

Where did you purchase that Houghton K from for that price, and how long ago has that been?

I've been a mod(W&SS forum) for almost a year now, I think.

I got mine direct from Houghton Canada, three years ago. I had originally called the US Company who patched me back over to my own country... 3 days later, it was at my door.

My 5 gallon tank is more than adequate for quenching 34" blades. It is 7"tall x 6" x 36". Nothing fancy though... just a rectangle tank. I used to use a 6"dia x 36" deep vertical tank.

If you are still considering canola, try Costco. I buy peanut and canola oil in ~ 5gal containers for reasonable.

stevomiller, I may run canola in my other tank but for this one that I am looking for right now I think I have made the decision to go with the Parks 50 or the Houghton K. Thanks for the lead though.

I still find it distressing that someone in the business is not doing more to make a good quench available at reasonable prices, but then I find the present day gas prices distressing too!:grumpy: oh what the hey gotta laugh or your gonna cry!:D

Is there something wrong with water? Seems the Japanese have used it successfully for 1000 years....

when you start dealing with carbon over 50 points, higher alloys etc., thin blades with no clay coating, complex shapes, the violent cavitation effect as the blade is becoming hard and brittle combined with the dimensional changes accompanying phase transformation often lead to the dreaded "TINK"
