Quench oil - Brownells/ATF/mineral oil

I have been using Brownells Tough-quench for a while and decided I wanted a deeper quench tank. Therefore, I need more oil. Tough-quench is almost $60 a gallon plus shipping now-a-days. And, it's basically mineral oil with some additives. ATF (automatic tranmission fluild) is also just basiclly a highly refined mineral oil and a lot cheaper. I'm thinking about adding some grocery store mineral oil at about $12 per gallon to my Tough-quench or just switching to ATF. The only oil quench steel I'm currently using is 5160. I've done a search on this forum for quenching oil and can find no real compelling reason to pay a high price for a store-brand quenching oil when so many knife makers are successful with less expensive solutions.

Your comments, as always, are welcome.

Jacque

Get in touch with Houghton and ask for houghton type G, its brownells tought quench, Brownells just repackages it under their name. 5 gal will cost 120.00, that is if you want to use tough quench, I never have used ATF, I used mineral oil and it dosent compare to Houghton G, not at all. Hope this helps alittle,Charlie

I answered this question on another board this way. Fine bourbon is nothing more than water with a few additives, but there is definately a difference, no? I think what you are suggesting would be the same as watering down fine bourbon. Just MHO.

McMaster 11 second quench oil is about $60 for 5 gal.

Well, with 3 people recommending McMaster (2 of whom I have spoken with before on this, or other forums) and the McMaster quench oil costing the same as the grocery store mineral oil, it becomes a no-brainer. I'll build a 5 gallon tank for this oil and keep my tough-quench small tank for small jobs. The McMaster oil has been ordered. Thanks to all for your advice.

Jacque

Just dont quench in bourbon.

Or drink ATF.

This has been recommended on many posts.

I'd just like to find the Canadian brand-name equivalent... or I'll be paying a higher price that $60/gallon for "an import" up here!

Anybody aware of what product is in the same quality and general price range up here?

No blame intended here, of course.:)

I guess nobody knows what the Canadian-brand equivalent of the McMaster 11 second quench oil would be?
