looking for a little help from the gurus here :D

Got some Cru-forge V, and pounded out a few hunters/small bowies.

very nice to work with.

One thing I haven't been able to get a definitive answer about is what to quench it in

It is similar in some ways to Aldo's 1084 + v, and I've quenched that in Park 50.

It is also close to O1, and that I usually quench in Park AAA

So..... what should I quench the Cru-forge in ???

thanks in advance

Bill

Bill, it should harden well in just about anything you quench it in. I believe AAA is more than sufficient.

Thanks - I have both of the oils, and I was worried the AAA might be too slow - tried emailing Dan Farr, since he seems to know alot about the steel, but haven't heard back

It is engineered for oil quenching, and AAA is Park's standard oil for oil quenching steels. Should work fine, I am about to try it soon myself. Trying to decide if I should do it in the forge or wait until I build my HT oven, the parts all arrived this week...just how heretical is it to HT cru-forge in an oven anyway?

You'll get a better HT in an oven no matter the steel. Only thing to beat it would be salts.

Bill I have made several knives with this steel and quenched in the McMasters fast oil with great results . My understanding is it is similar to 52100.. ...steve

Hey Steve, there's really no similarity at all between 52100 and CruForgeV:

52100
Carbon 1.00%
Manganese 0.35%
Silicon 0.25%
Chromium 1.50%

CruForgeV

Carbon 1.05%
Chromium 0.50%
Vanadium 0.75%
Manganese 0.75%
