In getting set up to forge, how much quench oil is generally used? 5 gallons? Can I squeak by with 2 if I forge a smallish blade? Thanks!

I normaly use about a gallong for most sizes, but my quench is set up as portable, when I get my shop built I plan on a permanat tank set-up with about 3-4 gallons. I also normaly only quench 1-2 blades at a time so a small quantity of oil does me fine. If I was quenching a bunch of knives I'd need a lot more oil to keep the temp down.

I agree with Will, you can get by with one or two gallons if you're not doing many knives or very large knives.

How hot is "to hot" for the oil to get? Just wondering what you all thought.
When they use salt, the quenchant is around 500 degrees. My oil is from 250 -300 degrees. When it the blade turns black, you could pull it out and let it air cool. I don't do many blades at a time either but will wait till I get a few ready before I do the heat treat.
