Quench Plate Width

I love the horizontal set up. I don't foil wrap blades any more so I have to go this direction. But it really does work well. As for cooling the plates I have a blower that sits at the back of the bench that blows across the plates. My AEB-L takes 12min in the oven. I quench a blade and then put a new blade in the oven. Then 5-8min later I open the plates about. 2-3" and remove the blade and wire wheel it. By the time the next blade is ready the plates are cool enough from the blower. I can run non stop this way. I did 11 blades in a row this way last night for Greenberg. Thinking about making a post about this as I discovered a few little tips last night.

Sweet setup, JT.
How do you feel about horizontal vs. a vertical plate setup?
I sometimes get a slight bend near the tip when plate quenching, and wonder if it's gravity or the foil packet (or both!). With a permanent vise setup, you could at least reduce gravity's effect somewhat.
i have started leaving the last 1/2 of tip unground and never looked back because the tips are all straight and dont take much more time to grind out

Thanks again! I bought this set once I figured out where to get dry ice. Grocery stores don't carry it where I live.

Check out Readdy Ice Website says they sell dry ice.

Hmm, interesting strategy. Great for kitchen knives, I'm sure. I've probably only ever put about 1% of my blades back on a grinder after heat-treat. Mostly it's all hand-finishing. Sure broke that rule today, though... There was no fixing that problem without the power tools... :-/

yep different knives and stdyles pick differnt post HT "grinding" i only put about 1/2 inch of bevel on my knives so i can get great plate quench. if i was doing thicker stuff or high alloy stuff then ues i grind more preHT
