Quench plates are supposed to be 3/4"+ thickness aluminum plates, big enough to cover your biggest blades up and a little more, right? (Or is 1/2" ok?)

Where have you guys found yours? I've just spent all day at every scrap yard, calling every machine shop in town, and asking everyone where they think I could find it, with no luck. No one has anything but thin sheet aluminum.

EBAY. Here's one:
1" aluminum plate

I paid significantly more than that through MSC for the same thing, then took it to a machine shop and had them slice it down the middle for $7.

Yep!! got mine off e-bay aswell. the thicker the better..,mine are 1.5" thick by 12" x 8.5" i think. they'll cool a blade real quick! cost me $25

I got mine from a local recycling/scrap center, 1 3/4"x6"x12" was under 20 bucks for both, but that was before scrap and metal prices went up

I've just ordered a sugar creek heat treat oven. When it gets here, I want to try my hand at D-2 and 440C. Do you need to use quench plates for these steels, and is there a good alternative quench method if I can't get plates? I guess my real question is how much better will the knife be using plates than just letting it air harden?

i forget where i got mine but i ordered it online 1x6x18 x2 plates
cost em but i didn't have to look and cut
