Quench Plates

Ernestrome, you have to remember the steel we are dealing with. This isn't for W2 or 1095 or even O1 (though some have actually plate quenched thin O1 with variable success). With air hardening stainless or tool steels, there is a pretty big time window to get below the pearlite nose. Air cooling the entire blade can accomplish this. We are using plates to speed up the process so the entire blade gets below the nose faster.
