quench tank

So I saw this oil waste can on Ebay and thought it would make a nifty quench tank. Here's a link to a new one: Justrite 6 gallon I especially like that it has a cover on it that would keep stuff from gettin in the oil when not in use, and that the cover is foot operated. I know there's a ton of less expensive ways to set up a quench tank, but for what the guy on ebay wanted for it I couldn't pass it up. Just thought I'd share just in case it peaks anyone elses interest.

Is it leakproof? I recently picked up a Behren's metal pail with lid with plans to use it as a slack tub but found out it's not intended for liquids. Also seems like the limited opening angle would be a pain.

Interesting....I'd assumed it would be leak proof....but maybe not since its intended "oily stuff" and not necessarily "oil". No matter...as it turns out, the guy turned down my offer...maybe a good thing. So lets turn this thread around a bit....what are you guys using for quench tanks. Who's been creative? ;)

Tony, the best thing I've found for a quench tank is a 40MM ammo can. They are 17" long 6" wide and 10" deep. They hold about 5 gals if you fill them to the brim. I keep about 3 to 3-1/2 gallons of oil in mine. I put it on a cheap hot plate I got from wally world to heat it up. When I'm done I can clamp the top back on ( they have rubber gasketed lids) and slide it out of the way. I mounted a temp gage and compass on mine so that it's easy to to track temp and align to north :D

You can find them for under $20 bucks.

Ammo cans work very well and come in many sizes. sealed lids too.

I use an 81 MM mortar can. Holds 5 gallons of quench oil. Rubber seal on the lid. Perfect for vertical quenching.

Wow...ammo cans, mortar cans...who'd have thunk. The year I turned 18, the U.S did away with the draft or I may have known. I always felt I'd missed out on something, truth be told.
