I have a piece of 3 in pipe with one end welded up,about18 inches long for a quench tank..after buying a new heat treat oven i thought i should build a bigger quench tank..so i got some 5 inch pipe at the scrapyard and welded it up. It is also 18 inches long. Do you guys think this will hold enough oil to quench my big choppers in? Is there some formula about how much oil you need for certain sizes of knives? Is the easter bunny real? Where do babies come from?..Ok guess ive asked enough questions..thanks Luke

Swede, if you are quenching multiple blades, the more oil the better. Small tanks of oil can over heat pretty quick, then you have to wait for it to cool. I usually HT three at a run, in a tank that can hold maybe 8 gal. It's a little too big, but was free. Some kind of military drum.

how do you heat such a tank? I ordered some quench oil from ellis knifeworks ..i was planning on using the smaller tank for small knives and the bigger tank for big knives..also is there a temp i should watch for that i dont want my quench to exceed..seems like i read 180 or so. thanks for the help..

Swede, a lot of people use the heating element from a water heater with an attached temperature controller. For high temperature are you talking about flash point? The desirable quenchant temperature is a function of oil properties, industry recommendation and the essential cooling rate of the steel. For example, Touch-Quench has a GM Quenchometer speed of 11.5 seconds at 100 F and drops to 10.0 seconds at 150 F. There are oils that are much faster and others that are far slower. Each operates at recommended temperatures or ranges.

I have a propane burner under mine, and use a candy thermometer hung over the edge of the tank in the oil.

Luke, if you are using the Parks 50 fast quench then i might have to bring my forge over and HT at your place until fedex finds my oil. hows that spear point chopper coming along?

Well since im using 01 i bought the slow quench from ellis knifeworks..it hasnt arrived yet ..but maybe next week..Jacob..the spear point chopper has taken a backseat to people who are paying..guess thats how it goes huh? Oh well thanks for the help..guess all there is to do is just do some heat treating and see how it comes out. Later..Luke
