My girlfriend's dad has a heat-treating oven and pyrometer (he's a sculptor -mostly in stone- so I didn't think of him as a resource for HTing). I'm trying to make a decision on a HT oil for general use. I'm doing pieces in 1095, 1084 and W1 at the moment. I have read that Parks #50 is a good fast quenching oil. I have also read that Houghton's Houghto-Quench K is essentially equivalent. And, last but not least, Houghton's Bio-Quench has what D. Scott MacKenzie of swordforums calls, "nearly the perfect cooling curve." Darren Ellis carries Parks but it's back-ordered and I can't for the life of me find a retail-type outlet for either of the Houghton quenches. So, where do I find these oils and does anybody have any particular nuggets of wisdom to dispense regarding their relative performances? Pearls of wisdom would also be acceptable. :D

Here's the swordforum post- http://forums.swordforum.com/showthread.php?t=53085&page=4 I know he said Bio-Quench was a great fast quench so I imagine it would work well for W1, 1084, and other shallow hardening steels but his post seemed to indicate that it would work for other steels too based on the temperature of the quenchant. Is this too good to be true? Maybe. He did say it's very expensive. I just haven't been able to find a price anywhere. I suppose I'll have to start making calls.
