was wanting to know what is the proper oil to use when quenching 01 tool steel.

I've used ATF in the past but the best choice would be Parks AAA.

Any medium speed oil should work.

Canola Oil

Preheated canola oil works very similar to regular oil. However it oxidizes over time and its performance degrades rapidly when that happens. So if you just need to do a couple its great, if you're going to do a lot just buy good oil. I use canola but I just do a few knives in the winter.
