• Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I hope that you all have something to be grateful for this year and for many years to come
  • America has reached 250 years, and I am grateful to be here, in the best country in the world. Thank every one of you who helps make this country a better place, those who have gone before and risked it all, and those who've paid the ultimate price to make the United States what we are today.

ok i know the reason a lot of people like air hardening steels is because of the tendency not to warp so bad and not having to deal with oil quenching, but i was wondering what would happen if you did do an oil quench with an air hardening steel like D2, would it be kinda like water quenching an oil hardening steel?

It would actually benefit from faster quenching. There is basically zero chance of cracking, and you'll get higher hardness.

I oil quenched D2, A2, S7 and 154CM. Clean up and warping is a problem oil quenching these steels. I plate quench now and see no difference in hardness levels between the two types of quench. I blow compressed air in between the plates which yields a faster cool down then oil.
