From left to right a Heller legend, a Save Edge and a Bellota. All brought to just past magnetic and quenched in water..All boke clean and you can see the grain structure fairly well. What do you think?
Loosearrow, Here is what the other side looks like, albeit on another of my knives. Fine teeth on the other side of the file contrasts well with the course.
I am a farrier and have piles of these rasps and a few years ago I called Simonds, Nicholson and Save edge and a few others and was told by all of them they use high carbon steel non of them case hardened their rasps.
Farrier rasps have to be tough and stay sharp or us farriers won't use them especially when they cost around $20 and only last about 20 horses and I have to re-sharpen them. Every rasp I have broke has a nice fine grain just like Kentucky posted.
If you really want to know you could have them tested then you will know exactly what it is , but me I just treat them like 1095 and it works great for me.
So if I were going to look for these on eBay, lets say, I'd do a search for farrier rasp without a specific name and look for save edge, nicholson, simonds. Any others?
