USAKNIFEMAKER.COM has 5 gals bucket of Quench A. Would this be good for 1095 and o1? I haven't been able to find 1 to 5 gallons of Park AAA. Help please!

I am not an expert by any means but believe that 01 and 1095 require different quenchants.1095 needs a fast oil while 01 will harden even in canola oil.

Hopefully someone with better answer chimes in.

The 01 takes a med. speed oil, the 1095 takes a fast quench like Parks 50. I quench a lot of 01 and it does not like the fast oil at all, it makes it brittle.

Bradley, I checked on this but could'nt find a 'speed' for this oil. I asked a few questions and will post when I hear.

1095 and O1 are about as far apart as you can get. 1095 needs a real fast oil/brine, O1 likes it slow.

A fast oil for 1095 --- 130* canola oil?
A slow oil for 01 -- what would be a slow oil?

Well, this thread from a few years back seems to suggest 130F canola for O1 is fine. That doesn't mean it's ideal, but the one O-1 blade I've done so far came out very hard.

I want to switch over to O-1 when I use up all the 1095 I have and when I do I think I'll see how room temperature canola works.

Canola oil at 120-130 should be ok for O1 but won't work well for 1095.

1095 really needs brine or FAST oil like Parks P50.

I can verify 130F canola for O1 will make it screaming hard. 130F canola will "work" with 1095, but not ideal. Most likely some fine pearlite will be in martensite matrix not reaching max hardness. But will get you by.

If the 1095 is ground fairly thin Canola will work just fine. Not so in thicker cross sections. 01 will harden in just about any oil.

That's what I have come to understand as well, Don. If the knife is in a thinner cross section, say 1/8 or less, 130F canola will probably give full/max hardness on 1095. Stezzan had just reminded me about that on a different thread.
