I am making small carving tools out of 1095 and I would like any info. on the temperature that the quenching oil should be at when I quench. I am using transmission fluid for quenching. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Phillip, a good meathod for figuring the correct temp for quenching oil is to heat it to the point where you cant leave your finger touching the oil, but not too hot to the point at which it burns ya instantly...

A good way of knowing what temp you oil is at and heating it is to find an old electric skillet, those things you plug in the controller on, and cut off most of the excess pan, you can see where the element runs by the bump on the bottom. then just submerge this electric paddle into your quench tank and turn the controller up to the temp you want your oil to be at, when the little light goes out your oil is ready...

Plus it makes killer Hush Puppies...just kidding...

Alan...

Go to the local grocery store and buy a meat
thermometer for about 4.50 and then heat the
oil to about 160 deg. It's that simple.
