I just wanted to take a minute to thank all of you forumites that helped me afford some Texaco Quenchtex A oil. I couldn't afford to buy a whole barrel by myself, thanks for helping me out! I hope we are all making knives that perform like Ed's and Bill's (and others) real soon. Let us all know how things work out. I feel like I made a bunch of friends all over the country during this adventure. You are all good honest folks! I hope your oil arrives safely. I feel like mine is liquid gold.

Take care,
Rick

Rick, The Eagle has landed - let the games begin!

Thanks for offering this to us.

You're both very welcome, it was a great experience. I'm glad to hear that you both got your oil.

Bob, Had your bucket leaked at all during transit? I was worried that it wouldn't make it to North Dakota let alone Mass.

I'm not opposed to sharing tips/tricks if you guys want to. I'll let you both know if I find out anything interesting. Right now I'm using 5160 to get a feel for what I'm doing. I hope to move over to 52100 in the next month or two. Take care and keep in touch.

right now it's about -20 below zero in my shop,,,the Type A oil is almost white,,,

takes a while to heat to the 135 I need for the quench....

Am I alone in useing melted snow for my grinder quench water?

Nope, but did you melt the snow before putting the blade in it or did you use the blade to melt the snow?

Wow! Does that sound familiar! I know why Park #50 is so close to water, it freezes like it! The stuff just doesn't get opaque and sluggish, it forms slushy crystals just like ice! Ad the AAA starts to pour slow. My salts don't seem to care though.

I know I am guilty! Snow will cool a warm blade at the grinder (better than a solid block of ice) in a pinch. Same in the forging room, my slack tub finally burst last year from years of freezing solid and thawing. Michigans cold snap has relented a bit, but today we are getting shut in under a pretty heavy snow.

watakipoma...

Right now it is -28 below Zero outside,,,,with a wind chill of,,,,of,,,mars?

I will have to heat up snow today for my quench water....I have my quench water pot sitting on top of a little burner so it will help it warm up in about an hour or so...

But I have found that when my quench water is froze into one solid block of ice that I do tend to melt it with the hot blade off the grinder as I go...

(Oh by the way,,,you guys in Michigan, if you get this cold in 2 days,,,you will all need new slack-tubs...LOL)

You need to rethink this one. I saw a weather report shortly after the Mars explorer had been deployed. It was for somewhere on the east coast where the temp was 17F., they said the explorer was giving a temp of 22F! Thats right, it is warmer on Mars than many places in North America right now! Heck it got warm enough to for me and some friends to go primative camping this weekend, it was only -2F at that rendevous, downright balmy from what it has been.
