We just downloaded this old movie and watched it last night. I remember seeing it many years ago when it first came out, and enjoyed it, but this time, knowing the real need for fire and the problems associated with it made it all that much more engrossing. Seeing the expression of wonder on the face of the man when he is seeing for the first time someone actually MAKING fire was fantastic!

If you haven't seen this movie, you must do so! If you can't rent it from your local video shop you can download it for free with any good torrent client. It's a 790M download so you'll need a high speed server, but there are plenty of seeds out there and it only took an hour or so to download. :)

Not that it has anything to do with fire...but Ray Dawn Chong is naked through out the entire film! And the fire scene is awesome.
I remember first seeing the film..I was just a kid, and first battle between tribes really shocked me...still a great movie.

From the sabertooth tigers, to the cannibals, to Rae Dawn Chong's tribe teaching the main character how to make fire, a great movie. The guy sniffing the women washing their clothes was hilarious. The mammoth scene was pretty neat. As well as a little first aid performed about halfway in ;).

This movie is shown in a lot of anthropology classes. Very, very good film. Ron Perlman was amazing in this movie and has never gotten his due as an actor in my opinion.

i could'nt agree more on the ron pearlman point! he is a fantastic actor!! i remember the first movie i seen him in,it was "in the name of the rose" and even then he was badass!-fed

Yes Great Movie. But poor Ron, getting type cast like that. He plays the same character in hellboy :D :D

Actually I bought my copy about two weeks ago. A great film!

Not survival oriented, more like Prac-tac, but I just watched Redbelt tonight. Holy crap that is an awesome show. Anything directed by David Mamat is worth watching!

I was thinking another movie until I saw Rae Dawn Chong mentioned.

What was the horrible one with Daryl Hanna as some kind of cave chick? I'm almost embarrassed to say that...Never watched all of it and it's been so long since I've seen Quest for Fire. :o

Tony - where did you find it?

Off topic - The Name of the Rose was a great movie.

That's it. Just thought of it and hit F5 before editing my post to put it up. Thanks Doc.

Actually the book was quite a bit better than the movie. IIRC, Jim Riggs was a consultant for her book. One of the things I liked about the book (don't really remember the movie) was the primary weapon was the sling.

You're right, he does get typecast a lot. If I remember, he was also the beast on the Beauty and the Beast series. His looks just don't lend him to being the leading man out of make up. But I think he is smart to capitalize on it instead of trying to break out in another direction. He's done pretty well with it.

I loved him in that too! His accent was very convincing.
