Question 4 EmersonRep about backspacers?

No. We still have some that have backspacers. Not all models are converted.

just curious but why only some? will all models eventually be offered in both or will some models only come in one configuration? i personally love the black backspacers on my emersons, i was starting to get concerned with all the new models im seeing with standoffs.

That's all the information I have right now. Eventually I believe most models will go the stand-off direction. There are still some knives that were old stock with the backspacer. The Persian (latest run) has the backspacer. Only Ernie can answer as to which knives will see stand offs.

Right after the switch to standoffs, which I was unaware of, I received a pair of CQC-7s that had the standoffs. I thought I had received counterfeits. I also thought that the standoffs looked terrible.

Now, after using my Mini A-100 with the standoffs, I realize that I only liked the backspacer in the CQC-7 because I'd been using one for years and didn't like the change. Now that I'm used to the standoffs I'm fine with them, and I'm surprisingly starting to prefer them.

why do some of you guys prefer one over the other? the only pro on standoffs i can think of atm is easier cleaning? anything else i might have overlooked?

I prefer the backspacer just because I think it fits the overall design more than the standoffs. I can't really explain why I think that way, but I do. I have models with both backspacers and standoffs and I like and use them both equally.

I prefer the backspacer as well.
IMHO the standoffs severely distract from the emerson ergos I have come to love.

It was so bad in fact (for reverse grip) , I sold my 8 and commander with standoffs and those are my two favorite knifes!

Ironically I will say the standoffs were perfect on the specwar design

I have both versions (standoffs/back spacer) in a lot of different models ... honestly I really prefer the standoffs, I think it looks good and in my opinion gives the handle that extra strength instead of being screwed into the titanium lock side of the back spacer model. Every time I would go to take down and clean one I always was cautious of tightening it back afterwards ... I cant imagine someone in the field having to worry about that while in a situation. But again having extra screws wouldn't help either lol ... but in the end standoffs all the way for me.

I'm new to the jargon of knives, and trying to learn. What is the difference between a standoff and a backspacer? Can you show with pictures as well as explain? And what makes one better than the other, or what are the practical effects of the differences?

I see some people like one, some prefer the other... I'm not asking for everyone to agree on which one is the best... I just want to know what the differences are, and the net effect, in practical terms, of those differences.

I hope in the future they can offer that option but my wallet will not like it.

Standoffs allow dirt and debris to fall out rather than getting trapped in the knife. A backspacer makes the knife feel more solid in my opinion. Both are good.

With standoffs you only need to disassemble the pivot side. Before with the backspacer you had to unscrew both sides because the body screws went through the backspacer and into to the opposite liner.

I was not a fan of the standoffs at first, but now have come to accept them.

My new 15s will both have standoffs, and on the one I already have in I do like the fact that the screws meet inside the threaded standoffs, not into the liner on the opposite side.

I will say, however, that I hope it is recognized that any of the knife models with standoffs need to have the mounting hole arrangement/number modified to properly house them. The 15 has three standoffs, which is perfectly fine and proper.

However, I think I've seen one model (is it the Commander?) with something like five or six, and that looks way too busy.
