question about adding grips.

I have a aus 8 blade I would like to add little slots on the back of the blade. I had thought of getting a dremell tool and cutting little grooves into the back of the blade sort of like a grip for your thumb while pressing or even sawing. I'm sure someone has done this, i'm worried about heating the blade up with the dremell tool, I think that might be a problem maybe not. This would be my first time trying anything like this to a knife so any advice would be great. My plans for this is not to saw anything but add to my grip.

that wouldnt be a problem. the problem is cutting them all the same depth and dremell blades shatter pretty easy. wear safty devices and take it about half speed for better control but to slow and it will stop the dremell. get some scraps and practice your depths and speed

well is the dremell the best tool for the job I would like each cut to be about thickness of a dime or less. maybe just as deep as wide.

I would use a diamond carbide burr of the right width. Make marks with a scribe at the appropriate distance from each other, allowing for the width of the burr. Lock the blade into a vise or some other stationary holder and go to it. Just go slow and make sure to keep the burr 90 degrees to the side of the blade and level. If you are too worried about heat build up, keep a wet cloth near by and hold it on the blade after making each cut.

the diamond carbide burr is a bit for the dremell right? from what i saw that would work for edges but what about little slits

You will probably stuff it fairly quickly on hardened steel, but a checkering file (any knife supplies house) will give you the effect you are after.

I agree, a small file would be the safest way to go: no risk of things shattering and it's much easier to control your cuts.
