Question about AG110's

I got a box from Cabela's today. One of the three AG110's has perfectly matched wine colored handles. Fit and finish is a good as the custom shop. The other two's scale is more mixed and F&F is closer to the standard 110.

Maybe the one with the mismatched scale needs some real nice Sambar stag. I don't own a Stag AG110. :)

Pics tomorrow of my "lack of will power" sale shopping at Cabela's. I've really developed a taste for the AG line of Buck knives.

I pondered buying a 'user' AG110 - and trying to preserve my near mint original AG110 - which I got for $59.99 with an NRA coupon some years back. The marred black - smudges on the gold writing - all came 'off' with some cleaning - it looks new once again. Polished the brass, too. Looks 'as good as new'. Then, one day, I discovered CS 110's - and nickel-silver bolsters - the AG110 was suddenly ugly to me!

So, skip ahead to last month - I finally ordered a basic CS 110 in S30V, nickel silver bolsters, and indigo Dymondwood scales - $86 delivered - and in days, too. Comparing the original S30V AG110 with this new CS 110, it's easy to tell which one is the CS knife - by feel or visually. No, I didn't - won't - be getting another AG110. Congrats to those of you who like them - and got more - but, fear not if you 'missed out' on the deal. Spend $86 on a basic CS110 in S30V in a range of handles - and your choice of nickel silver or brass bolsters. Life is too short to spend with an ugly knife.

Merry Christmas, all!

Stainz

Me too. Quite delightful cutlery. :D

Inside, with the other catalog and paperwork, was a $20 off coupon for the next purchase of $100 or more, expires 1/10/2011. Check that stuff before you pitch it into the fireplace.

Hey Flat, those AGs are really nice!I wonder if they will come up with a new handle option for 2011? :)

Da Haul!! And I don't think the AG110 is an ugly knife Stainz. In fact the rosewood when dark and matched well is as pretty a scale of any the wood handle options. But I do agree that the CS110's are assembled with more care and rate better in the F&F department generally.

I caught the 25% off sale and got the $20 so I save $130 on those five knives.

Sorry for the poor picture quality but my flash didn't go off on the group picture.

As to new handle material, I'd like to see smooth buffalo or ram horn next. Although, ram may have already been done with the BP110.

Anyway, the perfectly matched one (bottom) is going in the 110 rug. The one in the middle is going to my nephew (budding young knife guy) and the top is going to be getting some sambar stag.

Flat, I agree . The bottom one looks the best . I wish mine matched like that . Still, they're nice wood . 'Going in the 110 rug' ? Hope that nephew really appreciates that nice a knife . I know mine wouldn't but they'll grow up someday . DM

Comparison of the Rosewood, for your amusement, on both sides of my two:

The differences from one side to the other, IMHO, are subtle. The darker one is more consistent. The pins detract from the beauty of the wood. I prefer no pins. However, none of the pins are proud enough to catch my flesh so they have been set and finished with great success.

Custom shop vs Cabela's Alaskan Guide, build quality differences: I don't see it. Knives from both sources need cleaning in my hands: alcohol, Qtips, air blast and food grade mineral oil lube.

The photographs don't do either knife justice. The indoor lighting doesn't help.

Man those are beautiful knives..... Do you all like the lighter rosewood or the darker better? Personally, I find the lighter more attractive, but I think Flatlander may like the darker better. To me, the rosewood looks like cherry. Flatlander's top middle one looks good too. Light with dark tiger stripes.

Silver, Your call, all of them are handsome . Its when the eye views the entire knife as it has a dark coated blade . Thus, the darker Rosewood looks beter while viewing the entire package . DM

 Its funny, I prefer the lighter also. I like to see depth to the grain.

BUT, I can hardly argue with that David! My AG came with one dark scale and one light scale, so I got the best of both worlds ;) (The side with the AG logo is almost black and the side etched with S30V has a nice depth to the grain. ;))
They are all handsome!

Black mirror blade (aren't most black coated blades dull, not these beauties that are alive with reflective light): Outdoors on a rainy Sunday afternoon:

The blades on these Cabela's Alaskan Guide 110s alone, can you see the black mirror finish, are remarkable.

THX for looking.

I couldn't resist showing my favorite one. I have them in rosewood, ironwood and stag, but this has to be my favorite!

Thanks for the photos guys . CJ discussed this model and its coating saying; the blades had to be perfectly ground and polished before the coating went or the coating would magify the flaws . I have noticed the coating helps it to skate thru a material being cut . Try it on a apple or cheese then try a std. production blade . See if you notice a difference . DM

Thank you Flat for the excellent photos of the gorgeous hunter. Dino bone? They didn't come from Cabela's that-a-way. Uh uh.

OK, okay DM, all right. So, the blade is mirrored/polished before the coating and this gives the black mirror effect. Thank you for the inside story.

Typed a big thick black, red and green "BUCK" and displayed it on the computer's screen and took this pic holding the AG110 just right in front of the display:

Sidebar: BP Hunter, CPM154, S/B back in stock this month per my inquiry with BP. Can it be? Will it be the same, handle and blade, as it was when last offered (rosewood & grey-coated CPM154)? Might need its own thread...
