Question about Benchmades re-blade program.

I was looking over BM's re-blading program and I'm not totally clear on how it works.

I don't have any reason to want a new blade as I haven't cut anything yet with mine, but their pricing is quite good.

So... how does it work? Supposing I wanted a different steel than the 154cm on my 950 Rift. Did, or do, they make any other variations of this blade? What about gold class? I know that's probably impossible.

Edit- I don't want to replace the blade. I'm just interested in how the program works.

I don't think you can change steel or get blades from a limited edition put into your standard knife. I believe you can choose plain edge vs partially serrated though as well as coated vs non-coated on models available with both options.

you can't upgrade steel , you can get plain edge combo edge, coated or uncoated, unless your knife has been discontinued or updated with a new steel then you will get the newer blade steel that the knife currently comes in, but you can't send a 154cm blade and ask for a m390 or cpm-m4 blade.

When I had to get a blade replaced I had little to no communication from Benchmade and it took close to a month. Just my experience.

Never used it but I like how BM offers a blade replacement program. $25 for satin, or $30 for a coated blade. So sharpen and baton away! :D

You haven't used your knife yet and you're already hoping for better steel? Why?

Once you start using your knife, you may discover how difficult it is to actually wear out a knife blade.

Couldn't agree more. I've beat the crap out of my Rift and 154CM has been fine. Same for my 707 and other 154CM blades.

154cm is darn good steel. It wasn't but a few years ago that it was considered the best. It seems that over the last 8 or so years it's become a fad that the knife companies have to incorporate some kind of exotic steel for their knives that no one ever considered before or people think they're crap. It's ridiculous. 99.99% of the people on this board, including myself, will never need anything more than 440A.

Horses are a darn good method of travel. It wasn't but a few years ago that they were considered the best. It seems that over the last 8 or so years it's become a fad that the buggy companies have to incorporate some kind of exotic engine for their automobiles that no one ever considered before or people think they're crap. Skin a couple of deer heads with a m390 para 2 and a s30v para 2. You don't have to tell me which one will have chips and which one will hold an edge longer. Also you can tell when you sharpen them. The M390 will only need stropping, the S30v will need to go to the edge pro.

I thought I made it clear that I wasn't actually interested in replacing the blade on this knife.

I was joking about them discontinuing this model.

You can't assume avail of hi-end blades tho-- once they're out, they're out. Replacement M4 blades for instance no longer avail for the 525M4 and the 950M4forum knife, also the 806-1101 satin M390 blades are gone. In other words-- don't snap the tip....

Maybe if we lived 100 years ago.

Got some really thinned skinned kids on the boards. Will it help if I apologize to your knife for insulting it's alloy?

I think I just need to go back to the traditional forum with the adults.

I've got my 940 there now for a re-blade. What I did not realize, and maybe I should have, is that they keep the old blade. Not a complaint, just an observation. Been 3 weeks and was told next week. So lead time is about a month.

You cannot change steel, unless your exact knife has been offered in a newer steel and yours happens to be an older that they don't keep in stock.

The rule of thumb with their blade swap is you get what you had.
Imho it's one of the best things about Benchmade. No matter what steel you had for $25 they'll replace the blade if satin, $35 for coated.

I used them once for this service, and it was a quick 2 week turn around (including shipping), and I received a new blade.
