Hey guys,
First off I'd like to forewarn you guys that I'm new here and I have little to no knife experience. I have a really basic question and I was wondering if you guys could help me out.

Is it possible to decal your knife? My best friend is really into knives and I want to get him one with a custom design on the blade for his birthday. Is this even possible? If so, how?

Thanks!

Google electro chemical etching knives. You will have to have a stencil made and then find someone to etch it for you.

What if I wanted to add color / paint to it? It's more of a flat design so etching may not work for what I want

It can be painted with a "Duracoat/Cerakote" which still requires a stencil and then you bake the finish into the pores of the metal. It will be more durable than regular Krylon but will show signs of wear depending on the amount of use and abuse to the blade.

While there are many ways to coat or etch a blade, a decal isn't going to work.

Your question tells us that most of the ways to do anything are beyond your equipment or experience.

One possibility is to take your artwork and the blade to a trophy and engraving shop and see about having it laser engraved on the blade. It will be all in dark lines, so colors will not work.

I would avoid trophy shops. My experience is that the lines are not very good and the whole thing has a very low quality air to it. I would suggest laser engraving.

Just be sure the shop knows what coating to use on your knife. If you use the wrong spray on the blade it can immediately tarnish the steel. Laser engraving to get a black mark looks great on 90% of knives but there are some that just look better with a rotary engraving. A good example is the high polish finish on the case pocket knives, the rotary wins every time with those. Most black blades rotary better too.
