Question about bluing steel

Thank you, yes I never used distilled water or anything, I think I just browned my knife bit I'm happy with it.
 
I cant remember where I got this but its pretty simple, add 2 oz of phosphoric acid (you can get it from a industrial supply as a bathroom cleaner) and 2 oz of Manganese oxide (ebay) and a steel wool pad to a gallon of water, I use an old SS crock pot like thing. heat to a simmer and suspend the steel in it for 15 minutes. remove and dip it in a bucket of water. brush it with an old tooth brush and repeat the process until it gets as dark as you want. Ill go 4 or 5 times. when your there give it a light coat of oil to displace the water.
