Question about Buck/Strider

Just got the mini spearpoint and I did my usual diassembly/inspection and found a third oblong washer on the opposite side of the lock. Is this thing necessary? It makes the knife look out of whack. Anybody?

It's probably necessary to keep the blade play down to a minimum.
