Question about carrying your Spyderco

I have just ordered my first Spyderco and have a question for all you Spyderco long time owners .
All of my folding knives and multitools over the years have been carried in a belt sheath apart from one slip joint that was pocket carried .
I've never really carried a knife using the pocket clip . The clip idea must work or it would have been abandoned years ago . Your never to old to try new things , so I thought I'd break years of tradition and try carrying this knife with the clip .
How secure are they really ?( I haven't lost many knives , and I don't want to start now ) .
Do you clip it in a pocket ? ( which one )
Do you clip it inside your waistband of your trousers?
Does anyone carry their Spyderco in a sheath ?
Any and all advice will be appreciated .

Ken

PS. My knife I've ordered is a Dyad Sprint ( to many years of multitools and traditional knives , to change to a single bladed knife , just yet :) )

I've carried my spydies clipped everyday in my front right and left pockets for a couple years now. I've only had them pop out maybe three times. It's never happened in a way where I was unaware of it so I've never lost a knife.
It's my understanding that the dyad is pretty thick so it may take more getting used to than a regular spydie. I think over time though you will like it. If not, maybe try a thinner knife before you switch back to pouches.

Good luck!

Ps, lots of people wear sheaths for their folders, I've never tried it though. Also in the waist band works well.

I carry a tenacious more than a year now. The clip is tight and my knife never even moved from the position I've put it. Where and how i carry it depands of my clothing and where I'm going :
Cliped in left front pocket (not a leftie, just the right pocket is aways reserved for my phone) for the city or if I'm wearing a jacket- in front right pocket of the jacket.
Another way, if I know it probably won't be needed is cliped in the inside pocket of the jacket.
When I'm fishing the knife is usualy cliped outside my trousers , on my right side.

P.S. Please excuse me if I've made too many mistakes, I'm not an native english speaker ;)

Ive never lost a knife using the clip, 1 time a fence unhooked my sebenza but someone noticed, other than that my experience with clips as been great. I dont like clipping to my waist, i feel like it could cause rust from body sweat but im not sure. The only knife sheath i would probably use is my crk leather sheath but i still have yet to use it.

Which spyderco did you get?

If you keep the body of the knife inside your pocket with the clip on the outside of your pocket you will be all right. I have a variety of spyderco knives, and have carried them in all types of clothing. Never lost one. I had a Buck knife that I kept in a sheath despite it having a clip, because the clip was really stiff and hard to clip into my pocket.

Enjoy the knew knife...it will probably be the first of many.

You could always take the clip off and throw it in your pocket like a slip joint. Otherwise the clips are very secure (knife in pocket clip facing out. I've seen guys clip the knife to the outside of the pocket and yes it will get lost that way.

I've had no issues.
Last week however, my wife had her Delica fall out of the pocket (she found it though :) ).
I blame those stupid tiny pockets they put on women's pants...

If you wear pants built for men, with reasonably sized pockets, I foresee no issues.

Thanks for the responses guys .
I'm actually quite excited about this new knife and cant wait for the thing to arrive , it will certainly be different from my other knives .
I will give using the clip a real good try and see if it suits me and my everyday activities . My latest hobby is making leather sheaths , and it feels a bit strange buying something that I wont be making a sheath for .
One question . On the Dyad it appears that quite a bit of the handle will sit up exposed above the edge of the pocket . Somewhere here I saw a picture of another Spyderco knife ( no idea what model ) which seemed to have a clip that positioned the knife alot lower in the pocket .
Can you buy different clips that allow different carry heights ?

Yup, the Dyad benefits from a low carry clip.
I got this one here on the forum from member theoriginalspaceman. I think he's making some more.

I've never had a problem with a clip, but you can always take it off if you don't like it. I can even clip a Delica in gym shorts and run without it moving. I have much more problem keeping my Leatherman Juice from falling out of my left front pocket when sitting.

This^ I have the same clip on my delica and I'm nothing but pleased! He does a great job, they're titanium and affordable. I used the burner on the stove to (carefully) bend mine to make it "stiffer". Other than that, I'm pleased as could be. I've had the knife leave my pocket on it's own one time in the last six months I've had the clip. Absolutely awesome. I kinda wish he did a reverse wash/etch so the clip was darker, and just the feather was light, but otherwise it's 100% perfect.

I've had a few mishaps due to clip carrying, therefore I remove the clip and carry mine without. But maybe I'm particularly clumsy and it was my fault, because clips seem popular. Try it and see how it works for you.

I have never carried any of my knives in a sheath or used the clip if one was even provided. My pocket has always served me well. I have worked in shops where you had to turn your belt so the buckle couldn't scratch a customers car, carrying knives by the clip was also prohibited. I have a Spyderco Q and if you can't find a good way to clip it to a pocket or belt you could simply remove the clip and drop it in a pocket.

The clip retention is great and other than the occasional mishap of bumping into something (like my truck), they work just fine. On a side note, I carry when training and more than a few times I've had a knife explode out of my pocket or IWB on impact from a Judo toss onto the mat-- definitely not a typical daily activity...

The clip is hard to beat- mine is carried iwb even when training, my PS H1 stays put on my sleeve when diving too.

I'm one of the few here who's not a fan of clipped carry. For one thing, I prefer not to telegraph the fact that I'm carrying a knife. For another, I've just read too many reports of clips getting bent, damaging furniture and vehicles, or causing the knife to be pulled out of the owner's pocket and damaged or lost. So, 95% of the time, I carry my Spydercos loose in my pocket and remove the clips from any knife I plan to carry if it has one. My larger folder, usually a Stretch, goes in my left back pocket. I also carry a smaller one, almost always a Kiwi, and that goes in my watch/coin pocket. The only exceptions are autos, which I clip inside my front pocket, and a half dozen or so of my customized Kiwis that feature relatively soft stone inlays which I feel need an extra bit of protection. Those ride in a soft leather pouch which, in turn, rides in my watch/coin pocket.

I am younger and have only carried a knife clipped to my right front pocket. Occasionally, I have carried two and put the other in my back rear but I really don't like that as much. I am also a strong (in my case right front pocket) tip up guy. Reason being, I like the spine of the blade against the outside seam of my pants so it cannot open in my pocket. Certain knives with certain lock styles when dropped will pop open, my theory is if I should happen to fall or get in a car accident, similar forces could open the knife in my pocket. Very unlikely, but it trumps how easy or fast I can draw a knife out of my pocket. The only time I have ever had a knife come out of my pocket was climbing a tree. I climbed up and then when it was time to get down, I didn't like how far the next branch was so I bear hugged the branch I was on and swung down upside down. The clip grabbed bark and stuck to the tree. Watch seat belts too, especially if the knife is right front and you are on the passenger side of a car. Driver's side has never been a problem. I actually have a picture of the knife stealing tree as I was hiking with my wife and already taking pictures:) Luckily I noticed and hopped back up there and grabbed it.

First, congrats on your new knife. I have a feeling you'll love it and it won't be your last Spyderco.

If you're used to sheaths and like sheaths why not just carry it in a sheath?

I pocket carry with a clip.

One word of advice I can give - whichever pocket your knife goes in, that's the only thing that goes in that pocket.

Many a clipped knife was lost while pulling something else out of that pocket. Just don't do it.

I have been carry knives with clips since I first
saw them in the early 90s.

Only time I have lost them has been because of.

Going thru thick brush "Braiers" snatched it out of my pocket.

A seat belt grabs it. Maybe six time from the 90s till now.

TSA
because I forgot it was there and it is a reflex for me
to leave the house that I grab
Watch, Wallet, Phone and knife before I leave.

Or the clip got tweeked and clearly not holding

As for sheaths.
Only fixed blades.
and If I go thru Briars , I un-clip the blade and shove it in deep in the pocket.
