Rather than just heating with my O/A torch the way I normally do, this next time I was kicking around the idea of a clay coated full quench.
The reason is that I read in BLADE something about a use of clay to get a hardened edge/soft spine was a better way to go.
However this causes a few questions about the "How-to"s
Do I coat the spine and sides of the blade right up to the very line of where I want the hard steel to begin, or do I cover more steel,or less steel with clay?
I will use my gas forge to heat the clay-covered blade up to temp before the quench in oil, but do I still only dip the cutting edge in the quench oil like I have done before, or shall I dunk the whole blade under the oil?
Do I cover the whole tang with clay too?
