Question about deramping...

Have any of you deramped your Beckers? Will it void the warranty? I have one that I've been toying with the idea of grinding the ramp down on, it's uncomfortable and tires my thumb out quickly.

I'm sure someone else will say this so I'll beat em to it- the search function is your friend. Some folks get pretty upset about asking questions that have already been raised.

Many people have. It will void the warranty but Ka-Bar is fairly cool about their warranties. I'm not saying they will, but if something happens to it and they don't think grinding the ramp had anything to do with it or it wasn't abused they might replace it anyway. Big maybe on that, proceed with the assumption that they won't. You probably won't break it anyway.

De-ramp it man. Just do it.

Noooo! Just say no to ramp abuse!

Actually, I've de-ramped a 9 and a 10. :o

Sorry about that. If that's the case, please disregard my post.

Don't be sorry, and ignore any troll posts. While there may have been this de-ramping discussion, using the search function will yield about 30+ pages, with no specific thread that answers your question readily observable. Ask away, and if anyone should get their stink star in a roil, then it should be a MOD, not a troll poster. Welcome aboard, btw.

Go for it and de-ramp that sucka!

Love my 9 since I shaved off the ramp. Which model are you going to mod?

Also this is the place to ask questions so don't worry about it ask away. We are here to help. Welcome to the BK&T area of BF. It's a safe bet to assume that once you start to mod the knife the warranty would be voided but I cannot say for sure. I can however say that after modding my 9 I have put it through hell and it's held up just fine and I don't have a sore thumb anymore...

I wanted my 9 de-ramped but I don't have a good vice to do it myself. I ended up having a nice sheath made for it anyway so now I can't de-ramp it. I'll eventually get a 7 and de-ramp it though.

Are there considerations about ruining the temper on the 1095? In other words, take it slow or water quench?

Thanks for the info and the kind welcome! The Becker in question is a 10, which would probably be my favorite all-around knife if not for that ramp. I've never had a Becker break on me so I guess I shouldn't be too worried about the warranty. For those that have deramped, would you recommend using an angle grinder or a dremel? Unfortunately I don't own a belt sander which would probably be the tool of choice. I figure as long as I go slow and keep the area cool it shouldn't screw up the heat treat right?

Go slow, keep it relatively cool and you won't hurt the temper at all. An angle grinder gets hot quick so be a bit careful with that.

go slow - taking quick, light passes and dunk in water frequently.
I tend to hold the blade very close to the area being ground - if the metal starts to get uncomfortably warm to bare fingers, it's time to cool the steel.
