My GIB from Polar Bear Forge is ordered and paid for. I'm also waiting on delivery of the motor, it's a Dayton TEFC 1.5 HP/ 3450 rpm/ NEMA 56C with a 5/8" dia. shaft.

My question: the motor has a shaft length of 1-7/8". Sadly, I'm only just now wondering: is that long enough?

I remember reading something about this in the Grinder in a Box thread. Go take a look through there...

Probably depends on the drive wheel. I've seen the KMG style wheel use about an inch of shaft. The rest might depend on the thickness of the mounting plate and how much offset you need.

Bet it does fine, Craig

go to the knife making supplies and tools page i just bumped the thread for you they cover alot of stuff in that thread i would read every page if i was you :)

good luck

I found the little shaft discussion on the 9th page of the DIY GIB thread, but they talk about width not length. The wheel is 2" thick, the steel is 1/2" thick. So if the motor was butted up against the steel, you'd need 2.5" shaft length, for it to poke all the way through. I'm not very mechanically adapt, so I'm not sure if you need it to come all the way through the drive wheel or not.

Ya Jake I did read the whole thing before I shelled out 260 clams. I'm going with a 4" drive wheel on a 3450 rpm motor, if it's good enough for the Polar Bear Forge it's good enough for me.

Your answer all depends on the drive wheel you choose. Hopefully the set screw on your drive wheel is in the middle of the wheel, like mine. If so it will easily contact your motor shaft and all is good. No it is not necessary for the shaft to go all the way through your drive wheel. A lot also depends on how far you start your drive wheel from the vertical grinder plate. Hope this helps and just know my motor shaft is about the same length as yours and it works fine.
Chris

Thanks Chris! Plus there's a keyway cut out of the shaft so there's that. I'm sure it'll be fine.

Well, the box just showed up. Wow! I just ordered on Thursday and it's here already, thanks Jamie! LOL I haven't opened it up yet, hope I still feel elated later on, when I set about putting it together.

I'll probably start a thread about wiring up my motor, once that gets here. Not asking for help this time, but showing how I do it. It's the type of motor where you have some choices to make; how you connect things up determines rotation direction, 115/208 or 230 V, etc. Old hat for many folks here, but some people might find it helpful, I'll take pics.

a wip on the whole build would be cool too for those of us who arent that handy.... just sayin :)

congrats and good luck

Oh boy! Motor was delivered today. Holy cow I'm glad I didn't get the 3HP version, this 1.5HP unit is huge!
Guess I better get off my can and order the belts and wheels.

Wow, green is not a good color on me...I need to keep telling myself, "My time with the GIB will come.....it will come." And I'll wait patiently in the shadows...

Hey Tippet,

Where in SD are you. If you need help wiring your motor, let me know. I am in Rancho Penasquitos. Take care, Eric

Thanks Eric! I'm in Serra Mesa. I think I have the wiring part down, but we should still get together. Do you ever fish on the beach?

E the beauty of the GIB is you can get a little at a time- $260 for the kit delivered; then, when you can, beg borrow or steal a motor. For me, wheels and belts come last, just waiting to get paid.
