Question about finger guards

Hello;
I'm making my first hidden tang knife and I plan on putting a guard on it. The supplier I'm looking at offers brass in 1/4'', 1/8'', and 3/8''. I have no idea what thickness to order. I will not be putting a bolster on the knife, just a finger guard, so I don't think I need anything as thick as 3/8'', but I'd love to year your ideas. What thickness do you use for guards?
