Question about firesteel on your sheath

I've been working on a bushcraft/camp/woods knife for myself and have made up some custom firesteels (I feel like these two items are the most important I can have in the woods so am making them to match with orange handles) and have seen all of the sheaths with the firesteel in a little loop. Have any of you that carry one this way lost it? That would be my fear.

Im also open to idea/pics for sheaths. I'm probably going to make one out of kydex to hold the whole rig.

Thanks,

Charlie

I like the 'KSF Pocket Sheath', but it won't take an overly large 'bushcraft' knife - mine has the Bark River 'Huntsman', probably at the upper end, blade-wise. It's pocket does hold the firesteel quite well - and the whole thing is in a front pocket, anyway. See my post re fitting a flashlight in that sheath. My rationale was simple - the flashlight would have great use in the dark, whether at night or in a cave/hole, etc. With Lithium batteries, quite a long life could be expected with my choice. I could have a Bic in another pocket, of course - or my 'Montana Fire Starter', a firesteel with a Mg rod affixed and a lanyard with a hacksaw blade remnant attached - far better with ferrocerium rods. You need a rough edge for enough friction to ignite the ferrocerium particles - ie, throw sparks.

Did a brief tutorial awhile back using a lanyard from fire steel to sheath use cow hitch through grommet in sheath before inserting steel in firesteel loop if for some unlikly reason steel is hooked and pulled from sheath it is still attached by lanyard

This isn't the best picture but you can see how I keep mine from falling out. All you do is loop some paracord through the lanyard and down around the bottom of the firesteel in its loop.

Sorry for the bad quality picture. I'll see if I can find one in my pics that better illustrates the concept. There is no need to tie it to the sheath, just loop some paracord around the steel and you're good to go.

I have a BRK&T North star coupled w/Mikro Canadian with army firesteel but I have the paracord threaded thru the top hole bolster in the sheath. No fear of losing ,may fall out be will not be lost...

The Swedish army size firesteel is a really tight fit in my Northstar sheath. I cannot imagine it getting knocked loose unless it has been really scraped down with heavy use. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

I had the same concerns you did about the firesteel loop being a liability.

I cant speak for other sheaths, but the one I made holds the firesteel tight as a [insert inappropriate anology here]. At any rate, it aint leave the loop unintentionally, in fact I almost have to hold the sheath down with my other hand to draw the firesteel out.

The Kydex rig I got from Normark holds the steel tight, but I'm paranoid about such things and just tied a loop of paracord through the eye of the firesteel and a grommet on the sheath. I don't use that firesteel-- it is there for emergencies only and I didn't want to score the outer coating. I can cut it free when I need it.
