Question about FRN handled Spydercos...

I was wondering if anyone has had a problem with the metal pocket clip on todays FRN handled Spydercos? About 7-8 years ago I bought one of those FRN handled Wayne Goddard folders and after a few months of regular carry, the metal clip worked loose. The actual mounting screw did not come loose, but the base of the metal clip eventually "stripped" the square recess where it fit into the FRN handle. It still functioned after that, but it would move from side to side. Since then I have avoided all FRN handled Spydercos in favor of G-10 models.

I'm curious if this problem has been solved with the newer ones. From all of the pics I see on Spydercos website, the clip appears to attach in the same manner. I just came across an old "Flat-Iron" folder that I had forgot about and the clip on that is made out of the FRN material and actually part of the handle itself. Wish they still made them that way!

El_Toro,
Hang onto that Flat Iron, as those are really hard to come by. The Wayne Goddard is an awesome model, too!

To answer your question, I belive Sal has stated that they had deepened the pocket clip well in the FRN models with the barrel-bolt clip. I have not had any trouble with my Endura and Delica 3, my FRN Native, or my Salts, and I haven't seen anybody posting about any trouble with the newer generation, barrel-bolt clips in quite a while. Just so you know, the newer Spyderco models with FRN (Salt models excluded), like the Endura and Delica 4, no longer have the barrel-bolt clips.

Yay for torx screw construction into the steel liners on my delica4.
My clip worked loose and the only problem with fixing it was finding a T6 torx driver...

Thanks for the info, looks like I have some of the less expensive Spydercos to add onto my WTB list!:D As for the Flat Iron, that's not going anywhere. When I found it, I was a bit worried because it had been put away dirty. It cleaned up real nice though! It's a combo edge and all I need to do is sharpen the regular edge portion of the blade. The FRN handled Wayne Goddard was a great knife, unfortunately I don't know what happened to it.:( That's ok though, because I still have one of the original micarta handled Wayne Goddard models packed away. Which reminds me, I need to rotate it back into EDC!:D

Same thing happened to my old D3, after about 3 years of 365/24/7 carry. But, I just tightened it up, and it worked/ continues to work just fine.

However, the new style of construction is much more secure, as it uses 3 screws set into a metal liner for support, so this issue is much less likley to occur in the future.
