I just had my first lesson of bladesmithing today. We used O-1 steel and quenched it in an industrial quenchant calls "GLOC Quench A." He recommended it. I also saw that it is available at USA Knife Maker Supply. I think I can get it locally as well. I also saw a thread on ABS Forum in which Karl Andersen recommended it saying that it has the same formula as some old Texaco A oil quenchant.

Here is the data sheet from the manufacturer. It is Greek to me. http://www.greatlakesoil.com/products/1639-data.pdf

My question is other than O-1, what other steels are suitable for this quenchant? Would it be suitable for 1084?

I called them and they said it was almost identical to the long-since-gone Texaco A. It would also be great for 5160 and 52100.
