Question about hardware.

I`m going to make a few folders, but i`m having difficulty finding the hardware i need.
What i`m looking for is one continuous threaded tube. Preferably steel. From which i can cut my own barrels. (It`s hard to explain just what i want, but i do believe there`s a source for this out there somewhere.)
I`ve looked through Texas Knifemaker's Supply, but they don`t seem to have what i want. Well, they do have the barrel pivot pins, but not in the size i want, and i think it`s too costly to buy pieces that i have to grind down myself.
Or would it simply be easiest to buy steel tubing and a threading kit, to just make my own?

Anyone able to help point me in the direction of where to get what i want?

Do you mean like a foot of tube with a threaded hole all the way through the center?

If so, I don't think it exists.

G'day mate, type "Daryl Ralph" in google and you will find all sorts of ready made bits you are going to love. Might also be beneficial to buy one of the kits as a reference tool.

I`ve figured out the measurements of the barrel pivots i need, and they can`t be longer than 3/16", 0.187" or 5mm. And i can`t find that kind of pivot, anywhere!
I can understand why it`s not made, as i suppose it`s somewhat of a custom-measurement. I guess i`ll just have to get me a threading kit, buy tubing, and make my own barrels.

Thanks for the suggestions though, and please, keep them coming!

Just grind'em down to size!! its the O.D you want on spec.

The Halpern pivots are on spec, maybe a little oversize but that's ok since I polish them to fit.

Just buy the 1/2 in ones and cut them in half, then grind them down to whatever length you need.

I would guess that you would cause yourself more problems than you would solve by trying to thread a barrel yourself. If the threads are off slightly, the folder will not work correctly. This is due to how the blade travels as it goes through it's arc or travel. Most of the time you will wind up with a very stiff spot or two in the arc, which is impossible to fix if the threads inside the barrel are off.

Take the advice of the others and purchase the barrels in slightly longer lengths than you need, and grind them down to the length you want...life will be MUCH easier.

Sheffield has the best deal on 3/16 barrel pivots. And are one of only 2 places I've found that has them tapped 6-32.
Good quality stuff too...

I've found the quality at knifekits on parts to be crap, and the attitude you get when you call them on it is no better....

Now, I don't know what kind of design you have going on, but 3/16 in length is awful short.
With a 4-40 thread, in a perfect world, you can only get less than 4 threads per screw in the barrel. With a 6-32 this drops to less than 3.
This may not be enough for any kind of strength.

I used to ream through everything myself, and counterbore the outside.
On a 1/2" thick knife, you end up with a .350" pivot. Or a little better than 5 threads per side. Might not seem like a big difference, but it is.

I've now switched to pivots from Alpha Knife Supply.
They are custom made, with a 6-64 thread on just one end.
I modify the blind end to suit, and get an uberfine adjustable pivot with better than 11 threads engaged.
They held very tight tolerances making these, and the finish is great.

I have heard Alph does have the best pivots! but so far,i have not had a single pivot off spec from knifekits.i will try Alpha next though!

I have a bag of the pivots that come with bushings.
They are entirely inconsistant.
But they were free, another maker didn't want them because they are so bad, so I took them.

I have bought other things that were shoddy, and even a tool that doesn't do what it's supposed to do.

When I called them on it, the man on the phone was an A-HOLE.
A Big A-HOLE.
Like you only get to speak to people that way on the telephone kind of A-HOLE.
Because if you do it in person, it leads to a physical altercation...

I did end up getting my money back on the tool though...
