I'm looking at heat treat foil and noticing how not exatly cheap it is, and i was wondering, what the difference between it and this stuff.

http://www.mcmaster.com/#stainless-steel-foil/=5t0ebq

as long as my heat treat temp is above the temp it's shows to non oxidize, and
below the temp where that type of steel melts, it shodul do the exact same thing yes?

and not cost $540 a roll...

Anyoneknow if I'm barking up a dead tree?

Thanks,

Cal-

None of those foils listed are rated for a high enough temperature. The foil needs to withstand 2100 degrees or more.

Where did you see the melting temp, the
temps i saw listed were the corrosion resistance temps, which
you have to go above I thought.

Isn't the whole point that the foils uses up the oxygen inside it before the knife does, so it's a reducing atmosphere inside the packet, and thereby preventing scale on the knife?

According to this 309 melts at a high enough temp.

Melting Point (Deg F) 2650

Am I missing something?

Thanks,

its not the melting temp thats the problem but the temp of it welding. we use 2 types of foil at work. one high tamp and another low temp. the low temp is rated for 1850 but you hit that or just a touch over and the thing in the foil welds to the foil, which sucks. it happens at work. i am incharge of all the heat treating now so it has stoped ;)

yep that is what you want get the type 309 24x50 or 24x100 foot roll .002 thick. working temp is 2100 F

SB Specialty Metals(formerly crucible) sells 100 foot roles of the T321 for less than 260
800 365 1168
