Question about hinderer

I agree. No detent on a Hinderer is odd. The flipping takes awhile to break in on some, but no detent...

Just curious. Is your XM-18, 3" or 3.5"? Only ask because the 3" seems, to me, to take a bit longer to break in.... but it will. No need to worry.
I would upload pics but every time I try I cant(I'm not tech savvy )
It's a beautiful piece but I must confess I'm a Knife beater please don't judge me

The lockbar on mine slightly sticks up past the lock side scale when closed. The detent ball is in the hole, just think the hole is way too small to have a detent which keeps the knife closed. Hinderer's site claims they won't modify detent so think it's something I'll do myself at some point.

As long as the lock bar or detent hasn't been altered I'm pretty sure Rick will fix it under warranty. Send it in. You have nothing to lose & the knife isn't any good to you the way it is.

Of the six Hinderer models that I own, 4 had a strong detent. My Xm-24 had what I would categorize as a medium detent. I could not shake the blade out when closed but flipping action was average. My first Xm-18 that I bought in 2014 had nothing that resembled a detent. I did a slight detent mod with my dremel, drilling the detent hole which greatly increased the flipping action. Last year I ordered a xm-18 skinner and promptly returned it. A slight shake of the knife would send the blade in motion.

I must warn you, any drilling will void the warranty. I adore my Hinderer's but must admit that while the detent strength has increased over the past couple years, they are still inconsistent (from my experience). I'll leave you with a pic of the one that I slightly "modified."

I have had the exact experience described in the OP. Very stiff detent. After 4 weeks carry, I still cannot use the thumb stud. The blade is locked closed much tighter then my ZT blades. It is my first Hinderer. I hope it becomes much easier over time.

Hinderer won't tune the detent to the owner's liking (of its too strong or too weak) but they should fix it if it's so weak it's falling open in your pocket imho, because that's a safety issue.

Hinderers are one of my favorite knives to work on because there is so much you can do. Sometimes they are perfect (action wise) from the factory, other times they need some tuning (detent work, rounding the sharp corner on the flipper tab, and lock bar tension adjustment). Personally, I would adjust the pivot to where it's just enough to eliminate play but the blade should still be free falling when taking the tension off of the blade tang (by holding the lockbar out from making contact). That and a dab of oil should greatly help.
