Question about lanyards...no, I mean actual lanyards!

Hi, guys.

Lots of discussion about "lanyards," by which people seem to mean fancy braided fobs with beads and skulls and stuff.

Nothing wrong with that, but can we talk about actual lanyards for a minute? Like the kind that attach a knife to your hand, wrist or belt? I'm looking for some ideas.

I've seen some wrist lanyards that attach to the front guard. That makes sense to me for choppers and machetes that get swung. More commonly, lanyards attach closer to the butt end. How are people using these? Are you looping them around your wrist or wrapping them around your hand/knuckles? How tight? What materials and knots are you using?

What about belt lanyards? I've lost knives that got pulled out of my pocket on the woods and disappeared on the forest floor or deep snow. When working with a knife in and around water or the deep woods, it makes sense to me to fix it to my belt. Anyone doing this? Are you using shock cord or maybe those coiled pistol retention systems?

I'd really appreciate some insight before the spring/summer hiking season starts up for me.

I work in a marine environment and I use a lanyard long enough to wrap a cuple of times loosely around my wrist so that when I let go the knife hangs about 2 inches off the wrist. I used a to have a dedicated paracord lanyard but now I use whatever string or cord I have available and remove it after I am done. I have also worn a lanyard around my neck or attached to a harness or belt but I find that less convenient because it can either restrict movement and/or the lanyard gets in the way but I guess it all depends on where and how you use the knife.
