Question about MREs

Just curious where you guys purchase your MREs if you're not lucky enough to have military connections. I found a store on Ebay selling boxes of 12 entrees for $30 free shipping. Is $2.50 per MRE entree a good deal or should I keep searching for a lower price. It has been years since I've had an MRE meal so my next question is what are some of the better entrees? I appreciate the help.

That's about an average price for them. "better entrees" and MRE do not belong in the same sentance. You can find better tasting dehydrated food sources out there for your money. MRE paks are not very good for saving space, you have to break them down before you pack them and throw away the stuff you dont need or want. Even though they come with tabasco, take lots more. Good for winter survival for your vehicle in the winter. I have eaten way too many in years past.......just my opinion.

cheaperthandirt.com i personally like mre's ive had diffrent kinds. k-ration the modern stuff, vietnam issue and civil war issue (the last one is only for those with good teeth and lots of coffee!)

the link posted directly over this post is where I get mine they are very fast getting you your stuff and the food is decent. While you wont ever want to eat these all the time they are excellent for emergency's and for those times you just dont wanna go to the store. The best part about long life foods is they have free shipping on every order no matter how large or small if you wanna pick up just a pack of mre heaters or 3 cases of full meals shipping is already included.

Cyblade-

Thanks for that info. I was pretty impressed with their site and it's great to hear some positive feedback about them before I make an order. Free shipping was certainly a plus! I want to keep a few in my BOB and keep some here at the house.

Be sure and get a couple of the brownies and lemon poppy-seed cakes. They are kinda alittle dry but they are goooooooooooooooooooood, I put a couple of scopes of ice cream on the brownie yummy and I love just ripping open the lemon when I get a sweet tooth that and they will last forever in a drawer or glove compartment.

Don't know where you can buy them cheaply. I do have a pretty good handle on which ones are palatable and which aren't. IMHO the kind of MRE's is the Beef Stew, Anything w/ chicken and/or noodles is okay especially if you have the luxury of being able to heat them up. The Frankfurters, ham slice, and beef slice are atrocious. I wish somebody would have asked about this time last year, I could have told you what candy came w/ what entree :)

How about some beef or venison jerky instead? Doesn't taste like S*** either.I ate one too many MRE's,and I have no use for those nasty things.

Although I'm no expert on fine cuisine, I have to admit that I've actually enjoyed pretty much every entre I've had. I think they taste pretty good, and I rarely (if ever) heat them up. My favorite is the corned beef hash.

Real Military MRE's come with a heater that will warm up the entree. All the kosher ones/vegetarian one are good also.

I like the Mainstay emergancy food rations... while I wouldn't eat them regularly on a camping trip they are not gross.

I don't see the point in a MRE unless you want... well really no point unless you want variety for cheap. If cost isn't to important I would go dehyrdated food myself as you can get a variety and they last long.

Well, I ordered and quickly received a shipment of entrees from Long Life Foods. The beef enchilada with sauce seemed to be pretty popular so I stuck one in my new Jetboil and a little over 2 minutes later I was chowing down. Overall the taste wasn't that bad. I won't be eating them every day but for camping and hiking trips, BOBs, and emergency storage at home they will work just fine. By the way, that Jetboil is one little impressive stove!

Awesome :)
Yeah the JetBoil is nice but a lil on the big side. I like my Snow Peak TI Gigapower and TI cup tiny, and boils entire cup in 3.5minutes (yes I tested too!). I keep 2 gas cans in the cup and the stove ontop all fits in the cans mesh bag still too :) ooh and the windscreen :)

I`m wanting to try some different dehydrated foods suggestions?

I use my SVEA 123 and it is 30 yrs old.

The perfect stoves were made over 100 years ago (Optimus) and are still in use today.

They have seen more of planet earth than all other stoves combined.

When these new disposable looking plastic/tin foil like, ill concieved wonder stoves are 50 yrs old I may buy one and consider it reliable.

Oh ya it boils 1 liter of water in 5 mins tested 29.9 yrs ago and last week. ;)

Looks kinda large to me and:

"Boiling time, one litre of water: Appr. 7 minutes. With optional midi pump appr. 6 minutes"

I`ll take my gigapower's 3.5minutes and probaly half as light as that setup including the cup and extra fuel :D

Since this thread has turned into "my stoves better than your stove". I use a Whisper Lite MSR. Have had it for 12-13 yrs and it hasn't faild me yet.

Keep on believing it. got that t-shirt.

Ya, giga garbage canister stoves are for fools around here as they freeze solid in winter pretty much, beyond useless. Look like they are made of tin foil and coat hangers. Don't even get me started on canister carrying and price. Landfill I say ;)

5 mins with midi pump and half windscreen in my stove and uses virtually nil fuel.

See you in 30 yrs stoveless. You can borrow my same SVEA. :D

Failed me first trip out. The bottle hose connection turned into an inferno flame thrower.

MSR One of 5 stove types in the last 20 years I broke or returned for various reasons.

Lucky you got a good one.
