Question about O1 heat treat--foil, anti scale coating, etc.

I have a few O1 blades to heat treat. Just got an Evenheat oven. I don't have any anti scale coating. I ordered stainless foil instead. (Not sure what I was thinking.) Is there a good way to get the blades from the foil into quench? Or, should I just order the coating and wait? Or, could I get away with treating them without either the foil or the coating?

Thanks for your help!

If you go exposed steel you will get some decarb which you can hand sand or grind off. I dont think you can get the blade out of the ss foil pouch and quenched in time, at least I wouldnt risk it. You should order the coating anyways as you'll need it in the future but try this one without it cause hand sanding is awesome!!

629hugo, haha! Thanks.

Is the only downside of the decarb the sanding, or does it have a negative effect on the blade strength or something?

the decarburized layer will be useless (to knife design) and needs to be removed. Which means you are removing a little of your edge profile as well as thickness. The thickness will depend on temperature and time in the oven.

I am having to consider anti decarb as well. I have used satanite before with good decent results. PCB powder is another consideration. Funny, I've been trying to get thru a decarb layer on Blue#2. And let me tell you.....it is NO fun at all!!!! Reminds me very much trying to hand finish CFV. O1, 52100, W2, the decarb seems easy to get thru. NOT the case with Blue steel!

In any rate....it is wise to coat for decarb protection. You'll never go from foil to oil in time.

Actually......decarb "protection"....that doesn't sound right. Carb protection....that's what I meant! Don't want to actually protect decarb do we!!!
