question about paintball

Facemask & goggles (if not together), Marker (paintball), hopper (holds paintballs), paintballs, co2 tank(s), gun sleeve or barrel plug so you don't get dirt in the barrel. Thats pretty much it.

Gloves and some surplus camo gear is nice for protecting your hands and changing out of before going home, unless you like sitting on garbage bags in the car.:D

thats no joke and some extra pain meds for the up close shots as well :D..

we used an old abandoned farm house and barns as our course. we would take turns raiding the house and etc.. boy it was fun but with glass flying and paintballs littering the air it got dangerous quick! we loved it.

Face mask is a must, also carry a barrel sleeve or two, you will need a marker, a hopper, an air source (nitrogen or CO2 mainly), I recommend wearing sneakers and not boots, also it helps to wear a harness to put pods in. Cleaning rag and a barrel squeegee come in pretty handy.

Also, a freezer so you can freeze your paintballs to give them that little extra "oomph". And an insulated carrier to keep your balls frosty.
*note* I don't do this- but that's some pretty cold-blooded sh*@, and will likely earn you a boot-party.

:grumpy: +1, also bonus balling and shooting a hot marker will earn you an attitude adjustment. I got a scar on my neck where someone bonus balled me with a hot marker from 20+ yards away.

If your not playing at an official field, it would be a good idea for someone in the group has a chronograph to make sure everyone is shooting under 300 feet/second. The yellow hand-held ones are about $60.

Sometimes guns from the factory shoot hot, and sometimes players like to crank up their velocity to an unsafe point.

I used to play 2-3 times a month when I had a year round field pass at a couple of places around here, so I have quite a few scars from idiots shooting over 300 FPS. One time a guy ON MY OWN TEAM didn't know how to control his brand new $1500 gun and shot me in the back three times from about three feet away. Since it was GA during the summer and I was a decent player (didn't get hit much), I was only wearing a t-shirt and shorts. The t-shirt actually disintegrated where it was hit and fused in with my skin. It was pretty nasty.

The guy's gun got clocked at 450 FPS after he did that. He was a friend of mine from work, so I didn't do anything to him, but he had the pleasure of living in fear of my retaliation for the next few years. I'll give it about 10 years, then I'll visit him and pop a couple in his back. :D

To answer the OP's question, check out ebay. There are always guys dumping their gear, and if you are patient, you can find REALLY good deals. I got my marker (retail was ~$800), barrel set, nitro tank, and a few other things for about $200 because the guy just didn't know how to list items properly and run a decent auction. I would imagine Craigslist is the same

Also, unless you are planning on turning pro, go with a gun without electronics, especially if you plan on playing woodsball (in the woods) instead of speedball (with plywood or inflatable barriers on a small field). A nice non-electronic gun is very reliable, and if you are good, you won't need the 30 shots a second in the woods. Decent paint also matters quite a bit, since crappy paint will break in the gun and will not fly straight.

Did you subsequently adjust dude's attitude?

No and yes, I got pulled off of him only a few seconds after I got to him, although he never bonus balled me again.

If you plan on playing speedball, SmartParts makes some good entry level markers. If you are more interested in the occasional woodsball then I would recommend a Tippmann 98.

only bad thing about a 98 (which i have and i do love) is that its semi auto.. when you are playing with folks who have mostly auto you are basically sitting duck unless you know how to move and move quickly..

all my guns were semi auto and i could shoot them faster than the auto guns ;)

...man i miss those days.

do yourself a favor and buy decent quality equipment in the beginning. paintball is expensive. having to upgrade 10 times to get competent equipment is more expensive.

buy yourself a Smart Parts Ion, basic agitating loader, 20oz CO2 tank, and a high quality, comfortable mask.

yeah if you have the two finger hair trigger.. dont think the 98 has that option.. granted mine was more accurate but hell, accuracy aint worth a damn if you have to duck and run all the F****g time bc your game mates are trigger happy :D

Instead of CO2, you may want to consider getting a nitrogen tank, off ebay would probably be cheapest.

Nitro is definitely better, but keep in mind that most fields require that you have to get them hydro tested every two years (I think that is the time limit) and you can only have them re certified twice. I know that gives you about six years total, but that still turns a lot of people off of the more expensive option.

The big reason to have nitro is that CO2 WILL cause your gun to freeze up in colder weather if you are shooting a lot. Nitro is more consistent and does not have the freezing problem. I've been to some fields that only have CO2 though, and if they do have nitro, it is more expensive to refill. Check out the fields in your area to make sure that the nitro option is feasible.

Tippmann's Custom 98 is a great starter marker. Built like a tank, upgradeable, very simple to disassemble and clean. And, they're dirt cheap.

A lot of fields use them as rental markers, because they're tough enough to handle it.

I started with a 98, put a bunch of upgrade parts on it and had a lot of fun. Eventually, I moved to CCI Phantom with custom parts, and an Ion with custom parts from Special Ops Paintball.

Sold the Ion, still have the Phantom.

Anyway, long story short, a Custom 98 is a great starting point!

Get a decent mask(double lens),gloves, lightweight boots( I used to wear cleats with waterproof socks),agitated hopper and a marker that doesn't cost a fortune to service.See if you enjoy it enough before you spend loads of money.I know I did and evovled from pump-actioned markers to an Automag,Autococker and series of electronic guns ending up with my grail marker an Angel A1.I wish I still had my Phantom though;as suggested the Tippman products are good value and a good starting point.Upper echelon companies include JT,Dye,WDP and WGP.
