Question about spyderco persian

Ok, well the result of my sub-3 inch blade quest led me to a Persian. It arrived yesterday, and it's awesome. One question: Is there supposed to be enough side to side play in the blade when it's closed that with brisk shaking you can hear it touch the sidewalls? It's not really anything I mind, I'm just wondering if it's normal.
Thanks,
Richard

I got my one a couple of days ago, and it rattles too if I move the blade manually. It is even more suprising, because when opened the blade does not move even a hundreth mm in any direction :) I'll keep it :D :D
Oh, and congrats to Mr.Schempp, it is a great knife!

Everytime I start reading one of these threads about a potential quality issue, I cringe when I also own the said knife. And, so it was the case with this one. I just picked up my Persian and, the mildest shake yielded that pinging sound as the blade is apparently contacting the liner. Open, there is absolutely no play but, there is very minor play when closed. At first I didn't like it but, after closer inspection it appears the blade centering is fine but, the blade lies in very close proximity to the liners - especially towards the top of the hollow grind area of the blade where it passes the top of the liner. There is simply not much room for any movement here without contacting the liner. But, is it a problem??

Frankly, the more I examine this the more I believe it is pretty much a moot issue because I don't see how the blade could get scratched or damaged. The moment the blade comes off it's closed detent position the clearance to the liners grow quickly. I don't get any rub during opening or closing. Closing the blade, the tang maintains blade centering to the point that even with side pressure applied to the blade it still seems to close properly centered. The very mild ping, or contact when shaken just is not sufficient in my opinion to cause any issue with the blade such as scratching or adding undue friction to it's operation.

My verdict: While I would rather it not ping against the liner, it is really not an issue in the case of my particular Persian.

On my old one I wouldn't care if it just rattled when closed, but that it was made me notice it. Then I tried it open and there was a lot of side to side play. The replacement doesn't rattle and has no side to side play.

Nice knife Mr. Schempp...the only sub 3 inch I'll ever own, and the only sub 3 inch I've ever liked.

You should definately return this piece to the vendor...Take Care...Ed

In the end I returned it to Spyderco and got it back about 2 weeks later. I'd have returned it to the vendor if it looked like they had broken it or if they sent me the wrong item, but when a problem is the result of poor QC I return it to the manufacturer.

I recommended the vendor return because the factory inventory was gone within a couple of weeks of the discontinuation of the model. That was months ago. The remaining supplies of this knife are with dealers.

Many of the production knives that I have taken apart have more clearance on the pivot than my customs. Most commercial knives rely on proper tensioning of the pivot with the blade extended, this is the default assembly position. In pinning a knife the pin is deformed, sometimes bent in the assembly. If this is the lock postion, it will still yield a firm solid lock-up in use. In closing the oposite can happen and the blade will feel less tight in the closed position. The spring tension in the closed position keeps the blade held firmly. With the spring pressure relieved it takes less pressure to rotate the blade out of the closed position, which can be a good thing. Unless in the case of the knife that was shipped; it was too much play.

Spyderco breaks three knives of the first shipment to get a baseline on strength. The Persian broke at an average of 407 pounds, about 135 pounds per inch.

As you carry the piece (RFP), the radiused butt of the handle gives you good access to your pocket contents, somewhat rare for this size of knife...Enjoy...Ed

Mines the newer 75mm model, not the old longer one. I like a small knife to be small when closed too :p I keep mine in my right hand back pocket though, so I'm not worried about trying to get other things out of there. Good call on the clip btw...so many knives I was considering at first got dropped from consideration because of not having a clip.
