Question about stag cover cracks

So got a JBF Champlin Eureka second in Stag. I knew there would be issues and Im cool with it. My question is, is there a way to stabilize a crack? Do they continue to run eventually causing a piece to come off? I have no experience with this. Here is a picture.

Super thin super glue will do it. Put a drop of super glue on a piece of waxed paper and take a toothpick and pick up the glue with the tooth pick. Apply only to the cracked area so won't have to resand a big area.

That crack does not look bad at all. I wouldn't worry about that one, but it wouldnt hurt to put some super glue on it.

If the crack is so thin you can't get glue into it, then don't worry about it. Swelling and shrinking is what would make it spread, so put some clear paste wax on it to keep it consistent. I don't think you have any worries, either.

That doesn't look bad at all. I even have a knife or two with much worse-looking 'checks' in the stag, and it's still very stable. Doesn't seem to get worse over time.

If in doubt, some super-glue might ease your mind a bit. I don't think you need to worry though.

Here's an example. This is my Case T.B. 5339 SS sowbelly. You can plainly see the checks in the stag, from the pin on the left side, and also running toward the right side bolster, in the pic. It came to me like this, and hasn't changed appreciably since, so far as I can tell.

The stag looks great and I like the coping secondary!
Does the pull warrant using the opener?

No, the pulls are quite mild for a GEC made knife. The opener is just an added bonus.

Great looking knife. No worries about the crack it will not get bigger like some others have said if it really worries you super glue, but it really would be a hassle for no reason. I have many stag covered knives most have atleast one small hairline like yours and none have gotten worse over the years. I don't wax mine. Just a little mineral oil in the joints and then I wipe the excess oil with a rag that I use everytime (the rag is lightly permeated with oil) and just rub the stag a bit. Gets it clean and keeps it conditioned at the same time. I'm not sure this is what the pros recommend but that's what my granddad told me to do years and years ago, and it's worked for me.

It might not even be a crack! Stag has a lot of natural fissures and lines that could give the appearance of a fracture. Frankly, I wouldn't want to go putting glue on it. Some dirt and honest (or dishonest for that matter!) sweat on it will do it a power of good long term :D

Yeah I think I will just sharpen it up and use it, it begs to be used! I can feel the crack with my nail but no worries. I knew what I was getting into. I will put a little Renaisance wax on it and carry on!

Nice looking knife.

Quick question. Do 'factory seconds' hold the same warranty? So if down the road it cracked they will fix it?

Is it GEC that denotes these knives as seconds or the private dealers?

Kevin

GEC doesn't sell "Seconds". They do however sell some of their own Knives as "Store-Only" or what some Distributors call "EDC" knives. These do not carry a Warranty.

The Certificate of authenticity has hand written 1 of 4 seconds. Im sure they would work on it but I would have to pay Im sure.

And I assume you bought the "SECOND" from the Entrepenuer that contracted the Special Factory Order and not from GEC or a GEC Authorized Distributor.

Yes its a JBF Champlin so it was from the guys that are doing that SFO. I only use the term Second because that is how it was represented to me. Still a beautiful knife

Yes it is a beautiful knife. I've been carrying a GEC 735109 Burnt Stag "EDC" knife for four years with a very similar mark in the stag. I actually think it is part of the figure of the stag. Whatever it is,it has never moved or gotten bigger or chipped off or anything.

With everything that's been said by everyone so far in this thread, I'd still go to the hardware store and get a tube of Super Glues "Future Glue", put some on a piece of paper, put the pointy end of a toothpick in it, and then run the tip of the toothpick down the crack. It sure as heck won't hurt the cover and you never know how deep that crack is. Afterall, the knife was sold as a second and that means the manufacture/seller of the knife are acknowledging that there is a flaw involved with the knife - read cracked cover.
