I have worked with whitetail antler and Axis antler for handles and scales. I have just started playing around with potassium permanganate. The question is, does the stag that you guys use have the black parts naturally or does the supplier burn the antlers or what? Just shootin' for different looks. Thanks in advance.

A lot of it is natural, if you buy Sambar. There's also amber dyed that looks really good finished out. A lot of times whitetail will need a little dye, if it's from a shed antler that's set out a bit.

The analine dyes from lee valley work well too. I have amber, mahogany, and ebony dyes that give me the look I am going for.

Thanks for the replies. I like the potassium permanganate for brown. I'll try to get some black dye down in the "bark".

Use black Magic Marker in the deep ruts, then use the potassium permanganate. Then, seal the low areas by spraying with Krylon clear acrylic. Sand and polish.

Thanks Bill that's what I wanted to hear. Willie I plan on stabilizing myself with cactus juice a little later.!!SALUD!!

It doesn't do much to the outer parts, but the pith really benefits from stabilization.
