Question about "stone" for handle material

Might want to look into cutured quartz (cambria or I think zodiac) countertop scrap. From what I hear, this stuff shapes well and is about as tough as granite.

Hi Michael - Lots of agate and other types of clear stone in Lapidary or rock shops. You can cantact local rock clubs or search the net for one near you. I've cut and polished lots of different types of stone, but I believe that one would want to really think this through. Most stones used in a knife making would have to pass the test of an eventual drop. Most of the stones mentioned in this post would probably shatter.

The re-constituted stones sold by the knife supply houses would work better, in my openion. I've used turquoise in the handle of one of my knives and found that cutting, fitting and polishing the stone is just like the real thing, but I believe that it will be more durable and take abuse better than natural stone.

My 2 cents,

Harry

I've had a piece of fossilized stag for a couple years now that I'm just too afraid to touch.

J.,that's very interesting. I've never seen fossilized stag, and I wonder now why we don't see some around. The animals had to be pretty plentiful at the time, too. How did you run across it, anyhow? I'm not trying to hijack a thread, just curious.

My brother in law live around Savannah, GA and they're always dredging the wateways and dumping stuff onto some of the islands. He found it there along with all sorts of other stuff like musket balls, sharks teeth and such. I'll try to remember to take a picture of the piece I've got tonight.

>blgoode hor hard is Corian to work with?

Easy to work with just wood working tools but it breaks like a bad piece of glass if it hits a hard surface. You know how I know that!

:grumpy:

I'll use corian for handle throats sometimes. It gives a great contrast to some woods and works/polishes easily. I wouldn't use it on the end of a handle for the above mentioned reasons but, behind the guard it's great stuff.

Here's a picture of the fossil stag I have. One piee is definately a crown and I put an inset in of the...well what used to ba a pithy core.

man....corion may be better suited for bolsters......

J., you cut any of that fossilized stag yet? I am just curious what it looks like on the inside. Pretty neat stuff. Also, I enjoyed yours and Tess's coverage in KI this month. Way to go, folks!

Haven't tried it yet, I've been afraid to. What the heck would I cut it with?!? Let me know that and I'll give it a go.

It isn't even semi clear but reconstituted turquoise is available in"sheet"that could be shaped into spacers. I would assume any stone could be "reconstituted" for use as spacer material. using a clear polymer as a binding agent.

J., we have been using a diamond blade for cutting. Got any lapidaries in you neighborhood? Some stone is soft enough to use your grinding wheels and belts on, too. Better talk to a lapidary, or email your phone number to me, I will give you a call this Friday evening, or weekend, if you are available. We can get it cut. This week we are cutting coral and jade, be open to more this weekend. I still have some coral and jade going to some fellas, gimmie email. oldhickory45@yahoo.com

That's funny John...I don't even have a neighborhood.

I'll drop you an e-mail or give me a call. I'll be around this Sunday if you want to chat. I'll be getting an early night Fri. and going to George's Hammer-In on Sat. I can also just send it your way if it's somesthing you'd want to play with and use.
