Question about TGLB handle design

When I am using the TGLB for regular camp chores etc. I wrap my index finger in the choil.

Try it. It changes the entire feel of the knife.

I sure do understand why a person would want all fingers behind the guard if a person was fighting with a knife but, for all typical normal use and cutting tasks I always keep my index finger in the choil. It gives me great control and it's extremely comfortable.

In fact I always assumed that is why the handles were profiled the way they are. It feels so natural.

Black Paper micarta uses paper as its base material, layering paper and resin. Much less porous as well.

Black canvas micarta uses canvas as its base material, layering canvas and resin. Tends to soak up liquids a bit.

G10 uses fiberglass as its base material, layering fiberglass and a slightly denser resin. Very dense and heavy.

Very simplistic explanation but it gets the point easier for those like me who dont really care about the specifics. :p

Busse normally offers two choices of handle types: Standard and Magnum. It would have been very nice to have had a standard handle option on the TGLB for those with smaller hands. The difference in the feel of the handles on the Fusion and Special Forces styles is substantial. In some cases I prefer the much thinner and flatter profile of the standard handle design.

The glass fiber is why one should where breathing protection when sanding G10. The others make nuisance dust, but the glass fiber dust is really bad for your lungs.

This, I have smaller hands and the TGLB feels perfect for me when I use the choil.

Very much so! Silicosis is no joke. I was told it takes much more than those paper masks to keep it out as well. I used to do glass bead blasting in my garage but stopped when the dust started getting to me even through the mask.

What's wrong with the paper micarta? A lot of folks like it for how it looks.
FYI..... If you sand it down, you might want to finish it off with finer sandpaper to get it looking smooth again.

It's just my preference. Don't like the feel as I've had Canvas handles before and prefer that more.

Even tho I was not going to do any sanding on the handle, I'm also not set up for this kind of thing at my house anyways. I think it's a better idea to let this knife go to someone else and use the money to buy the CGFBM if possible.

Never know if we like something unless it's in our hands. Such is life.

Be sure to look for the standard handle option for that FBM or you will get the same issues you have with the Gemini. The handles are almost identical with the golf ball feel in the magnum's. I can take a spine view pic if you want to see the difference.

THe Fusion Steel Heart is closer to the size of the TGLB if your wanting to stay in that size range and yes they do come in standard handles as well.

Awesome, Mister Leatherman. Thank you, I will make sure to request "standard handle" when looking for one.

Also, I was thinking if I get a CGFBM or Saber grind FBM, that I would get a smaller knife such as a Jack Hammer or saber grind Boss Jack.

I also own a Swamp Rat RMD Bowie knife (one of the first 3 made and sold at a knife show before they made the second batch later on). While the Bowie knife is great, feels like something is missing. Handle is great and flat but I think the Boss Jack will be a better fit? (I hope :p)

Good luck with your quest. The search for the perfect blade is always fun. Try as many as you can get your hands on. When it is over and you have found the one you will know without a doubt it is the right one.

Garth, as usual, is right on the money, most of the fun of buying and trading is the quest for that next perfect knife. :)

The Boss Jack definitely has a smaller handle profile than the RMD, too small for me actually, but small hands seem to really like that one. I have one of the early model Boss Jacks with the fuller, I'm told the handles on the production models are a bit more hand filling, or at least feel better (like those on the Boss Street)

@stjones, for some reason, that TGLB looks GREAT! It has seen some use, and looks tough! Just had to tell you. To the OP: sorry, didn't mean to derail your post.

I thought the tglb was too fat in the handle as well. But I love the BJLE. And if you find the handle to be too small it's easy for Busse to add liners.
Without liners it's 0.684" at the center fastener. With liners added it's 0.74".
One other option is to send it in to Busse and have them handshape the slabs it was about $30 IIRC. It basically takes all the texture off and leaves them smooth with the benefit of taking the overall handle size down about 0.1" on both sides. I had this done to my NMFSH and I love it.
Give them a call for actual pricing though, not every option is available on every knife.
Hope this helps.

Derail away. :p

And Demonic1, I've asked in an email about the options and prices for those options, still waiting.

In the meanwhile, seems like the TGLB is sold and shipped (waiting for it confirm it's arrival so I can consider it a complete sale)

Soon, I will look for a new Busse knife!

Quick and dirty spine shots of the two handles on the FBM. I hope its visible enough. I could not get them to stand up to save my life. :p
