Question about the smaller Opinels

Wow, that thing is weentsy! Thanks especially for the in-hand picture, which provides some scale. It sure looks good, though.

Blue is always good. :-)

As for a quick-release attachment, are you familiar with Nite Ize's S-biners?

Their smallest ones, a size 1 or even a .5, would do the job well. The steel ones can be plain, black, or rainbowed, and the plastic ones come in a variety of colors. Unlike regular carabiners, the S-biner attaches in two different places. In this application, it would mean that you could easily unhook the knife as needed without having to worry about (let alone deal with) the attach-er detaching from the lamp.

Although you may already have something simpler and more elegant-looking in mind. :-)

Looking good, Rick! If possible could you take some pics with it next to some more familiar knives, so I can get a better idea of size? The in-hand shot is great, but can't really tell if your hands are S, M, L, or XL. I'm also curious about the opening tension, etc. Thanks! :D

Rick, that's pretty darn cool.

I don't think I've seen any pics of that one in hand before; it really is compact. How's the opening/closing tension?

Thanks, David. It really is kinda neat. The tension is just about perfect for a knife this size. I would estimate the pull at about a 3. Real smooth from closed to opened and back. Reminds a little of the action on a Sebenza. Never thought I would ever make that comparison.:p

That looks like a good combo there, pertinux. I am not really very innovative. Never even thought of a paperclip. I have a red carabiner that I'm gonna try but it seems a little too large. If I'm not happy with that I might pursue one of those S-biners. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks, Keith. I will try to get some pics up tonight with a 34OT or a Conductor.

Very cool knife Rick. Thanks for the pics.

Thanks, Kevin, and you're welcome.

Here you go, Keith. Schrade Old Timer 34OT on top, GEC #33 Conductor on bottom. #4 Opinel closed length is 2 17/32 inches. (just barely over 2.5)

I tried a paper clip through the ring hole but the curved end of the paper clip is not wide enough. The handle at this point is 3/8 of an inch wide. I tried a split ring too but I had to spread it apart too far to get it through the hole.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks much, Rick! That really puts it in perspective for me.

Possibly a leather shoe lace through the lanyard hole tied into a loop, then onto a caribiner or S-biner? Or possibly use a needle nose pliers to modify the end of a large paper clip so it's wide enough to fit? Just throwing stuff against the wall here to see if it sticks. ;)

That's an impressive comparison, Rick. And informative too (I have three Sebbies myself). :)

When you mentioned rigging up a quick-release keychain, I immediately thought of these. They're very handy, and I've used a bunch of them. Can be released and re-attached one-handed also:

Hmmm.....some good ideas here, guys. I thought of one of those as well, David. I wondered if they could be operated with one hand. It's good to know that they can. I think I can get one of those at the local hardware store too. That just might be the ticket right there.

Since I can't get a split ring through the hole without stretching it out too much I could use Keith's idea of a leather shoelace. This is all coming together quite nicely.

Sounds like you might have a better-integrated solution in mind, but just to clarify-- the paperclip is in the picture simply for scale. The S-biner itself has two "gates" or carabiner-pressured clasps, one at the top and one at the bottom. You could attach the top of the "S" to your light, and open only the bottom gate to detach your knife. I have S-biners in several different sizes, and use them for all kinds of little hooky jobs.

Whatever you come up with, I'm glad you're pleased with your Opinel.

Thanks for the clarification, pertinux. Actually I was trying to use the paperclip to put through the small hole on the knife handle but I did think that your photo was part of your suggestion. Either way, I certainly do appreciate your help.

Just for the fun of it, here is the finished product. I re-installed the original ring that was in the handle when I got the knife. (don't really know why I removed it in the first place:o) I attached a small split ring so I would have room to get my thumb under the lock release on the quick release keychain. Then I attached the "female" part of the keychain to the lamp with a zip tie so it would be stationary.

Works like a charm! Thanks everybody for helping me out with my first Opinel.
