question about thinner longer busse knives

so if it is not the polished finish but is the matte crinkle stuff, then what is the grind?

Well, grind and finish are two different things. As an old Busse fan, you know that Combat Grade usually means coated, and LE was generally a satin finish. The SARSquatch were a strange one, as Jerry was trying something new, called Competition Finish. Naked, but not done to standard satin goodness. In practice, they were prone to surface corrosion. Jerry explained that the decarburization layer, a product of the heat treat process, was to blame.

the grind on the sarsquatch is kind of psuedo zero edge convex. Basically if you have a saber ground knife configuration the main grind starts below the spine (3/4, 1/2 or 1/4 of the height of the knife) and terminates at the edge, leaving enough thickness at the edge that a second "edge bevel" is necessary. A true zero edge does not have this, the main grind terminates at the cutting edge, so that if the main grind is 21 degree's per side, it goes from the beginning of the saber grind all the way to the edge with no secondary bevel.

This is not what the sarsqautch is. The sarsquatch is not a consistent convex curve from the top of the saber mark to the edge. It is closer to say that the corners between where the full thickness of the spine and where the saber grind starts have been rounded, and where the saber grind meets the secondary bevel have been reduced and blended to give the appearance of a "zero edge" configuration.

It's a way of increasing cutting performance without inducing the weakness of a zero edge. When you have an edge bevel, generally there is more metal directly behind the edge then there is in a true zero edge configuration, which makes for a stronger edge.

If you're worried about a bigger pricetag for the competition finsh... don't.

They go for about the same as the CGs. ;)

I believe I have a coated version soon to be on the way. Sarsquatch, that is. Can you sharpen it on an EdgePro?

The coated SARsquatches have the V-grind, IIRC... So no, I can't because I'm terrible with an Edge-pro :o, but yes, it can be done.

What about the Desert Storm Fighters? I can't seem to find their thickness, however.

And just to tease you, here is the perfect piece of ThInfi:

jacknick1.jpg

The one and only NICK Fighter, shown with a Satin Jack LE for scale. The blade is 7.5" tip to scales and only 0.125" thick. It doesn't get much better than this.

And, No! It is not for sale. The SJLE is long gone too.

anybody know the thickness on the boss jack or the desert fighters, I may not have all these names right, I still have a lot of catching up to do on the Busses. Also, what knives do not have a choil besides the boss jack? I am looking for something of INFI that I can use as my hunting knife as well as camp knife for food preparation and such.

Ahem... The one and only what now? ;)

IIRC, both the Boss Jacks and the DS Fighters are .220"

Other choil-less Busse's are the SAR5, the Killa Zilla I and...? That might be it. You might like the SAR5... It is an odd Busse, that Jerry hates ;) ...But it really ain't so bad.

There are no-choil tank busters and boss jacks too, right?

He mentioned BOSS Jacks, but good call on the Tank Busters! Yep, TB's were offered w/o choils ...Can't believe I forgot that already. :o

you guys rock, this is extremely helpful. I have a Sarsquatch on the way and I may have jumped the gun on that one and may end up trying to trade or sell it if I can find something of close to 7 inches in length and thin enough to do well as a skinning and slicing blade as well. I would prefer the blade edge to come all the way to the handle or have as small of choil as possible. The information you guys are supplying me is bringing me up to date is very much appreciated.

I've seen this before and wondered. Your file name implies Thin, but the visual thickness of the handle, the saber grind, the swedge, and the appearance of the plunge line all lead me to believe that the parent blank for that was an XXXL NICK, not a Thin one. What is the thickness at the ricasso?

(Still a nice knife, by the way.)

Unfortunately, I've misplaced the knife. :o I had a problem with the bone used for the handles and sent it in to Busse where Garth kindly replaced the handles and sent it back, but that's where I'm fuzzy on where I put it. I'll search for it over the weekend and get a measurement for the record. I can say that it is darn thin and at the very least it is close to the thickness of my Thin NICK... Jerry called it a Thin NICK variant at BLADE 2007, so that's what I based the image file name on. If they DID use a XXL NICK to grind this from, then they were grinding it down for a looooong time, LOL! It's much thinner than that.

I did find another pic that I took before it travelled back to Wauseon and it shows the tang a little better...

Yours is a real beauty as well...I've always admired it every time you post a pic of it. :)
